Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to intensify cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns across the country with people's participation to prevent the spread of dengue. He gave the directives at a meeting on the dengue situation and measures to combat the disease held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu. The Prime Minister stressed greater public participation in dengue prevention instead of relying solely on government agencies. He called for raising awareness about keeping homes and surroundings clean, removing stagnant water and waste, and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds. Tarique Rahman also directed the authorities to involve disaster management volunteers, Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Rover Scouts and Red Crescent volunteers in cleanliness and awareness activities. He emphasised conducting cleanliness drives at the local level by engaging people through these volunteers. The meeting also discussed strengthening treatment facilities and patient-management capacity for dengue patients at upazila-level hospitals. The supply of mosquito nets for admitted dengue patients was also discussed to reduce the risk of the disease spreading through mosquitoes that bite infected patients. Stressing the need to ensure implementation of the decisions taken at the meeting, the Prime Minister said, “The decisions must be reflected in the field.” Emphasising prevention as the key to combating dengue, he directed the authorities concerned to work in a coordinated manner and undertake extensive awareness campaigns to ensure people's participation in cleanliness activities. Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare MA Muhit, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Health Dr SM Ziauddin Hyder, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Shakirul Islam Khan and secretaries and senior officials of the ministries and divisions concerned were present.

Bangladesh is witnessing a rise in dengue cases, with the mosquito-borne disease spreading across the country and the number of infections and deaths continuing to increase, putting fresh pressure on hospitals and health authorities. Since January 1 this year, a total of 41,032 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 38,179 have been discharged after recovery, while 113 have died till Saturday (Sept 5), according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) alone recorded 39 deaths during the period, accounting for around 34.5 percent of the total fatalities reported across the country this year. The city corporation also recorded 5,400 dengue cases, accounting for 13.16 percent of the cumulative cases reported nationwide. The figures highlight the concentration of dengue-related deaths in the DSCC area, where the disease continues to pose a significant public health concern.

A woman died of dengue and 11 new patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue symptoms in Faridpur district in the 24 hours till Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Nasrin Sultana, 30, of Chowdhurykanda area in Bhanga upazila. Nasrin Sultana, a mother of two sons, was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital on August 18 after developing dengue symptoms. She died around 1:00am on Friday while undergoing treatment, said Faridpur Civil Surgeon Dr Mahmudul Hasan. He said 163 people were treated for dengue at government hospitals during the period, while 25 patients are currently receiving treatment. Nasrin's husband Miraj Sheikh alleged that she was first admitted to Bhanga Hospital after developing a fever. Although doctors advised several tests, she was not tested for dengue at that stage, he claimed. As her condition worsened, the family consulted another doctor, who advised a dengue test. After the test came back positive, she was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. “If we had known earlier that my wife had dengue, perhaps we could have arranged treatment sooner and made greater efforts to save her,” Miraj said. With dengue cases rising in hospitals across the district, the Civil Surgeon urged people with symptoms, particularly fever, to seek medical advice and get tested without delay.

Three people died of dengue and 467 new patients were hospitalised across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Thursday. With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 53 in the country this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation and Khulna division, it said. Since January 1 this year, a total of 15,153 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 13,931 have recovered and been discharged, while 1,169 patients are currently undergoing treatment, according to the DGHS.

Three people died of dengue and 534 new patients were hospitalised across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Wednesday. With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 50 in the country this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in Barishal and Mymensingh divisions, and Dhaka South City Corporation, it said. Since January 1 this year, a total of 14,690 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 13,452 have recovered and been discharged, while 1,188 patients are currently undergoing treatment, according to the DGHS.

Three people died of dengue and 372 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Monday. With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 37 in the country this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation, Khulna and Barishal divisions, it said. During the reporting period, 347 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery. Since January 1, a total of 10,857 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 9,786 have recovered and been discharged, while 1,034 patients are currently undergoing treatment.

Days of heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging in the capital have heightened the risk of dengue, with stagnant water accumulating on roads, at construction sites and in residential areas, creating ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

With the latest fatality, the dengue death toll has risen to 22 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation, Khulna and Barishal divisions, it said. With the latest admissions, the total number of dengue cases reported in the country this year has reached 7, 557. In 2025, Bangladesh reported 102,861 dengue cases and 413 dengue-related deaths.

Bangladesh recorded one death from dengue fever and 198 new cases in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Thursday. With the latest fatality, the dengue death toll has risen to 13 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new death was reported in the Mymensingh division, it said. With the latest admissions, the total number of dengue cases reported in the country this year has reached 5,515. According to the DGHS, 63.6 percent of this year’s dengue patients are males, while 36.4 percent are females. In 2025, Bangladesh reported 102,861 dengue cases and 413 dengue-related deaths.

Bangladesh has recorded two more deaths from dengue and 157 new cases in 24 hours until 8:00am on Wednesday. With the latest fatalities, the dengue death toll has risen to 12 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new deaths were reported in Mymensingh division, it said. With the new cases, the total number of dengue cases reported in the country this year has reached 5,317. According to the DGHS, 62.1 percent of this year’s dengue patients are male while 37.9 percent are female. Bangladesh reported 102,861 dengue cases and 413 dengue-related deaths in 2025, it said.
