A madrasah student died after being electrocuted in Kamrangirchar area of the capital on Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Yasin,10, a first-grade student of a local madrasah. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm in the Jowlahat Chowrasta Hajirghat area of Kamrangirchar. He was later taken in critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 5 pm. The victim’s father, Sabbir Hossain, said Yasin had gone to play in a nearby field when he accidentally came into contact with a tin-shed rickshaw garage beside the field. He said the child likely became electrocuted after touching the structure, which may have been live due to rainwater. Locals rushed him to safety and attempted first aid before taking him to the hospital. Hospital police camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk said the body has been kept in the morgue. He added that Kamrangirchar Police Station has been informed for further investigation.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized Indian smuggled goods worth over Tk 1.22 crore in separate raids conducted along the border areas of Brahmanpara and Burichang upazilas. The operations were carried out on Sunday based on intelligence information by patrol teams of Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB) under its Shashidal and Kharera border outposts. During the drives, BGB personnel seized 648 Indian sarees and 337,400 fireworks, according to officials. The estimated value of the seized items is Tk 1,22,56,000. Officials said the confiscated goods will be handed over to the relevant customs authorities following legal procedures. Commander of the battalion Lt Col SM Shariful Islam said the force remains alert to ensure border security while continuing efforts to prevent smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and push-in attempts. He added that intelligence surveillance and operational activities along the border have been strengthened and such operations will continue in the future.

Police recovered the body of a man from a pond in Atpara upazila of Netrokona on Monday, a day after he went missing. The deceased was identified as Ontor Mia, 25, son of Kuddus Mia of Haripur village under Duoj union in the upazila. According to police and local sources, Ontor had been missing since Sunday night. His family searched in different places but could not find him. Around noon on Monday, locals spotted a body floating in a pond behind the house of Niyat Biswas in Tenga village under Teligati union and informed police. Relatives later went to the spot and identified the body as Ontor's. Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Netrakona Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. The victim’s brother, Ferdous Mia, said Ontor often left home and returned after a few days. He had been missing since midnight on Sunday. Officer-in-Charge of Atpara Police Station Mohammad Zubaidul Alam said legal procedures are underway following the recovery of the body.

A boy drowned after falling into a water-filled excavation for an unfinished drainage project in Kumarkhali on Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Md Ifat, 6, son of Kamrul Hasan of Elangi area 3 of Kumarkhali Municipality. He was a class one student of Baitul Ulum Islamia Cadet Madrasa. According to police and family members, Ifat went out around 3 pm with his cousin Samad, 11, to graze goats. When he did not return home, relatives began searching for him. Around 4 pm, they found his sandals beside the under-construction drain in front of Manik Sheikh’s house and recovered him from the water. He was taken to Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Locals said the municipality had undertaken a 500-metre drainage project from Manik Sheikh’s house to the Gorai River about a year ago. Although the excavation was completed before the last monsoon, the construction work had not started, leaving a deep waterlogged ditch. They alleged that negligence by the contractor and the authorities led to the child’s death and demanded punishment for those responsible. The tragedy left the area in mourning. Ifat’s mother, Sharmin Akter, was inconsolable, while his father fell ill and was admitted to the health complex. Contractor Liton Ali said he was overseeing the drainage work but claimed he was unaware of the incident. Upazila Nirbahi Officer and municipal administrator Farzana Akhter said action would be taken if negligence by the contractor is found. Officer-in-Charge of Kumarkhali Police Station Jamal Uddin said legal action would be taken if a written complaint is filed.

Bangladesh Bank has signaled its intent to support the revival of closed industrial units through a strategic refinancing package, but has firmly ruled out blanket bailouts for non-viable or willfully defaulted businesses. The decision came following a high-level meeting between central bank officials and a delegation of industrial stakeholders at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters on Monday. Bangladesh Bank Governor  Md. Mostaqur Rahman chaired the meeting. During the meeting, stakeholders raised concerns about the growing number of shuttered factories. In response, the central bank clarified that while a refinancing package reportedly around Tk 40,000 crore is being considered, the support will be strictly merit-based.   "We need to investigate why these industries closed down—whether it was due to power shortages, lack of buyers, or market fluctuations," said Abdul Hai Sarker after the meeting. He is the Chairman of Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) and also Chairman of Purbani Group, who joined the meeting as a representative of the industrial delegation. "The Governor has assured us that only 'genuine' businesses facing temporary working capital shortages will be supported to ensure production resumes and defaults are avoided,” said BAB Chairman. The discussion also touched upon the controversial Section 18 (Ka) of the Bank Resolution Act. Business leaders expressed "deep apprehension" regarding the potential implementation of this law, fearing it might be misused to allow former directors—who were allegedly involved in past bank looting—to regain control of financial institutions. However, central bank sources indicated that the stringent conditions attached to the act would make it practically impossible for such controversial figures to meet the criteria for return. Stakeholders urged the government to handle this legislative matter with extreme caution to protect the sector from further "looting cultures." The central bank also reiterated that the planned merger of five specific banks will proceed without change. Despite initial skepticism from some quarters, the Governor emphasized that the merger is essential to put the banking sector back on "the right footing." Industrialists urged the government and the central bank to consult with general stakeholders before finalizing major policy interventions. "We are elected representatives and industrialists; we are here to share our fears and ground realities. Policy-making is more effective when it includes those who are actually operating in the sector," in response to a query of journalists, a representative of businessmen said.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Monday said the government will establish an effective and independent media commission to ensure freedom of the press. He said the commission will be formed through consensus based on opinions from all stakeholders so that it is not seen as an imposed structure. The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of Asia Post at Bengal Shilpalay. Swapon said the world is going through a period of transformation, where the rapid expansion of digital technology, online media and internet use has accelerated the flow of information, but has also increased the spread of misinformation, disinformation and distorted content. Protecting people from false information is now one of the major challenges of the time, he said. He also warned that the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) is creating new challenges and said the government has taken initiatives to develop new strategies to address the issue. Swapon sought cooperation from media professionals in tackling these emerging challenges and reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting the freedom, dignity and professional integrity of the media. Journalists, media workers and distinguished guests from different sectors were present at the event.  

The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations that one of its office assistants was taken to a police station, physically assaulted and threatened with being shot. The committee was formed to investigate a complaint filed by Md Sarowar Jahan, an office assistant in the office of the senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to a notification issued on Sunday and signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Abdullah Al Jabed, Sarowar submitted a written complaint on May 5. In the complaint, he alleged that on May 4, Police Sergeant Md Rezaul Haque seized his official identity card, important documents and personal mobile phone without any reason. He also alleged that he was taken first to the Shahbagh Police Box and later to Shahbagh Police Station, where he was physically tortured and threatened with a pistol. The investigation committee has been asked to examine the incident and recommend legal action against those found responsible. Md Jasim Uddin has been made convener of the committee. The other members are Tawsif Ahmed, who will serve as member secretary, and Farhana Mridha. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 working days.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will definitely visit China “at some point,” Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir said on Monday, stressing that the timing and itinerary of the Prime Minister’s first bilateral visit abroad have not yet been finalised. “Once finalised, we will let you know. At some point, the Prime Minister will visit China, which remains an important development partner for Bangladesh,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Adviser made the remarks amid speculation that the Prime Minister may visit China first, potentially with developments related to the Teesta project. He said Bangladesh had a “very good and positive” discussion with China regarding the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), adding that China’s Exim Bank will finance the project. Asked when work on the Teesta project would begin, the Adviser said the study report is currently being reviewed and recommendations are being looked into. He said the project requires detailed discussions and further consultations before implementation can proceed. “More discussions are pending. More time will be needed for detailed discussions,” he added. At the invitation of Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of China, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman visited China from May 5 to 7, during which the two sides held talks in Beijing. Adviser Humaiun Kobir accompanied the Foreign Minister. Both sides agreed to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and strengthen exchanges and collaboration in areas including trade, investment, industry, digital economy, water resources, health and people-to-people connectivity. Bangladesh also expressed appreciation for China’s long-standing support for the country’s development, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Kobir said Bangladesh’s relations with China are historic and the relationship was initiated by former President Ziaur Rahman.

Local elected representatives and NGOs on Sunday demanded stronger border security in Cox’s Bazar and the formation of a Rohingya Repatriation Commission to accelerate repatriation. The demand came at a press conference held at Cox's Bazar Press Club on Monday titled “Sovereignty must be upheld in Cox’s Bazar; participation of local government and people in Rohingya relief activities is essential,” organised by the Cox’s Bazar CSO–NGO Forum (CCNF). Moderating the programme, CCNF Co-Chair Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said further Rohingya entry into Bangladesh must be stopped in the interest of national security. He called for strengthening Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) operations, ensuring Army presence at the border and continuing diplomatic efforts on Rohingya repatriation through ASEAN and dialogue with the Arakan Army. Rezaul alleged there has been no visible progress in repatriation and claimed border security in Ukhia and Teknaf remains weak. Speakers at the press conference also alleged that UNHCR and several UN agencies are excluding local NGOs from partnerships and instead working with international organisations. CCNF Member Secretary Zahangir Alam alleged that UNHCR, through BRAC and Infinix, has started constructing permanent shelters in Rohingya camps without consulting local government representatives, creating concern among local residents. He claimed such infrastructure could encourage further Rohingya influx and raised environmental concerns over the construction materials used. CCNF member Md Helal Uddin said UNOCHA recently allocated USD 150 million in humanitarian assistance for Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar, but local NGOs are not receiving funds in line with localization commitments. He demanded legislation requiring UN agencies to implement projects through local NGO partnerships and called for broader local NGO participation in the Joint Response Plan (JRP). Md Shahinur Islam of COAST Foundation said only 22 percent of recipients of a BRAC-managed pooled fund are local NGOs, while 78 percent are national NGOs. He also raised concern over the appointment of foreign nationals in senior positions of INGOs and UN agencies in Cox’s Bazar, claiming it may affect repatriation efforts. Environmental activist Md Ilias Mia said around 8,000 acres of forest land were destroyed for Rohingya camps, causing environmental damage and depletion of groundwater levels. Tanjir Uddin Roni of COAST Foundation called for representation of local government and communities in Rohingya crisis management structures and demanded a transparent repatriation commission. Engineer Helal Uddin, a UP member from Rajapalong Ward 9, alleged that camp waste has damaged around 300 acres of farmland and worsened groundwater depletion in the area.

A court in Lakshmipur on Monday sent a woman to jail in connection with a case, forcing her to take her infant child with her. Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Shah Jamal passed the order when the woman, Farhana Akter Shilpi, along with another accused, Jahir Uddin, appeared before it, said court official Delwar Hossain. Shilpi’s infant son Siam also accompanied his mother to Lakshmipur District Jail. Jailer Nur Mohammad Sohel confirmed that Shilpi and her young child were taken to the jail in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Shilpi’s two other children — Class-V student Shipon Hossain, 10, and second-grader Tamanna Akter, 8 — were seen standing outside the jail gate in their school uniforms, waiting for their mother. Both are students of Shaheed Smriti Adarsha Academy and are currently sitting for their examinations. The incident drew attention after defence lawyer Mohsin Kabir Swapan shared photos of the children and a video of the incident on Facebook. According to the case statement, Mahtab Uddin Bhuiyan filed the case on April 15, accusing Shilpi and nine others of attacking him in the Shahapur area of Lakshmipur municipality. The complaint alleged that Shilpi struck him on the back of the head with an iron rod, causing a severe injury. However, the medical certificate issued by Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital described the injury as minor.

US President Donald Trump on Monday said the Iran ceasefire is on “life support” after he rejected Tehran’s latest proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. Officials said Iran’s proposal included limited concessions on its disputed nuclear programme, but Trump dismissed it as “garbage” and said he did not even finish reading it. Speaking at an unrelated White House event, Trump said the ceasefire was “unbelievably weak” and described its current condition as being on “life support.” “I would call it the weakest right now after reading that piece of garbage they sent us,” he said, adding, “I didn’t even finish reading it.” The stalled negotiations and recent exchanges of fire have raised concerns of renewed conflict in the Middle East, potentially deepening a global energy crisis linked to the war. The situation has also kept tensions high over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. Trump said he would consider suspending the federal tax on gasoline to help Americans cope with rising fuel prices, though such a move would require approval from Congress. He is expected to raise the issue during a planned visit to China this week, where he is likely to urge President Xi Jinping to put pressure on Iran, China being the largest buyer of Iranian crude oil. Meanwhile, diplomatic gaps remain wide between the two sides. Trump has demanded a major rollback of Iran’s nuclear activities, while Tehran is seeking a more limited agreement that would ease restrictions and reopen key trade routes ahead of further talks. According to regional officials quoted by The Associated Press, Iran has proposed diluting part of its highly enriched uranium and transferring the rest to a third country, with Russia previously offering to host it. However, Trump has insisted that all nuclear material be removed completely and is reportedly unlikely to accept Iran’s broader conditions, including formal arrangements over maritime control and compensation demands.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir on Monday said Bangladesh is not intimidated by barbed wire and will not remain silent if killings along the border continue. “See, if you want to have relations with people, the people of Bangladesh are not afraid of barbed wire. Do you understand? The government of Bangladesh is also not afraid of barbed wire; where we need to talk, we will talk," he said. Responding to a question at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kobir said the Indian government needs to demonstrate a more "humane approach" in resolving border security issues if it wants to strengthen people-to-people relations. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that the state government has begun the process of transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing the India-Bangladesh border. The newly elected chief minister said that the land would be handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs within 45 days to address the issue of illegal infiltration. Adviser Kobir said that election rhetoric and actual governance are two different issues and Bangladesh wants to see whether West Bengal Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari's government is following the election rhetoric in governance. “But the actual running of the government is a different matter. Let’s wait and give it some time to see whether the BJP government in West Bengal intends to carry the same rhetoric into governance," he said, adding that their relationship is primarily with the central government. "We do not want to become involved in their internal politics.” He said Bangladesh would not remain silent if people continued to be killed along the border. "The border we saw during Sheikh Hasina's time will never be the same again. If someone wants to do something on the border in that way, this Bangladesh will not be the same Bangladesh that will sit and watch. Bangladesh also has its own plans on what to do. I hope things will not go that way," Kobir said. Highlighting the importance of regional stability and peace, the Adviser said Bangladesh seeks regional stability and peace, wants dialogue with neighboring and regional countries, and expects all sides to engage sincerely despite challenges. Emphasising the commitment between the leadership of the two countries to advance bilateral relations, he said, "If we want to move bilateral relations forward, then the mindset and commitment of both countries’ leadership must remain firm, and there is indeed a commitment to continue despite the challenges. Of course there will be challenges, and in some cases serious challenges, he said. However, he said, as long as the door to dialogue remains open, initiatives can be taken to resolve them. "Some issues may be resolved quickly, while others will require more time." The Adviser said they do not want to get into their (West Bengal) internal politics and stressed that they want to live in a cordial space. "We must maintain regional peace and stability," he said.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been placed on high alert amid developments following the assembly elections in West Bengal, assuring that the force remains fully prepared to prevent border infiltration and maintain law and order. Briefing reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting on improving the living standards of salt farmers chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said political changes or internal administrative decisions in any Indian state, including erecting barbed-wire fences along the border, are India’s internal matters. “Bangladesh maintains diplomatic relations with the central government of India based on sovereign equality. The change of political power in any specific state does not affect Bangladesh’s foreign policy or bilateral relations,” the Home Minister said. He said BGB remains on constant vigilance to prevent any unauthorised border crossings and ensure that the security situation remains stable. Responding to a question about information spreading on social media claiming atrocities against minorities following the West Bengal polls and their possible impact on Bangladesh, Salahuddin said many misleading posts were being circulated using old videos. “So far, neither the Home Ministry nor the Foreign Ministry has any information regarding the authenticity of such incidents or any negative impact on Bangladesh,” he said, urging people not to be misled by online propaganda. Turning to salt farmers, the Home Minister the government has taken initiatives to ensure a fair price for salt in line with production costs to achieve self-sufficiency in the salt industry and protect the interests of local salt farmers. He said the Ministry of Agriculture is currently reviewing the production costs of salt farmers so that they receive a proper price for their hard work. “The justification for imports is being verified by assessing the domestic demand for both industrial and edible salt.” Salahuddin stated that, upon the collection of accurate data and in accordance with the directives of the Prime Minister, decisions will be taken in such a manner that the country may achieve complete self-sufficiency in salt production, while ensuring that the farmers do not incur any losses.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun on Monday warned that the country's unresolved energy crisis remains the single biggest obstacle to attracting both local and foreign investment, and that no amount of policy reform will convince investors without a reliable power and gas supply. “Until we solve the energy problem, we can talk about investment but it's going to be very difficult for local and foreign investors to believe in the Bangladesh story,” Ashij was speaking at a roundtable on ‘Trade Policy, Industrial Protection, Investment Impacts, and Consumer Welfare,’ organised by the Policy Research Institute's (PRI) Center for Trade Policy and Protection Research (CTPPR) with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), held at PRI's Banani office. Ashik said Bangladesh's fundamental investment challenge is not the absence of good policy but the failure to implement it. He cited the difficulties businesses routinely face in clearing raw materials at Chattogram Port as a case in point, a problem where policies exist on paper but enforcement and execution remain dysfunctional. “At the principal level, there are policies regarding these problems but no execution.” Ashik added that the government's current priority has shifted from chasing headline growth figures to generating sustained, employment-driven growth, and that BIDA is working to merge and streamline investment promotion institutions to reduce friction for investors. The BIDA chief disclosed that investment promotion agencies have submitted 46 specific recommendations to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), including 19 proposals on deregulation. Among the key proposals is the introduction of a structured VAT slab system to provide clearer incentives for local value addition and reduce policy uncertainty. Ashik also pushed back against criticism that BIDA favours foreign investors over domestic businesses, saying the agency advocates for all investors from within the government. While foreign direct investment brings technology transfer and efficiency gains, he noted that domestic investment remains the backbone of Bangladesh's economy. “Bida's responsibility is to advocate from within the government on behalf of all local and foreign investors.” In his keynote address, PRI Chairman Dr. Zaidi Sattar painted a stark picture of a trade policy framework that has for decades prioritised protecting domestic producers at an enormous and largely invisible cost to ordinary Bangladeshis. He said Bangladesh's average tariff burden of 28 percent, against a global average of 6 percent and a lower-middle income country average of 7.2 percent, combined with a web of para-tariffs, has pushed the nominal protection rate to 27.9 percent in FY26, making domestic sales far more profitable than exporting and creating a structural anti-export bias across the economy. The roundtable was chaired by Dr. Sattar. Panelists included Consumer Association of Bangladesh President AHM Shafiquzzaman, former NBR member Md Farid Uddin, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Taskeen Ahmed and Policy Exchange Bangladesh Chairman and CEO M Masrur Reaz.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam on Monday warned that the licences of Primary Collection Service Providers (PCSPs) would be cancelled if they charge households more than the fixed Tk 100 monthly waste collection fee or fail to remove garbage regularly. The warning came at a views-exchange meeting with waste collection agencies held at Nagar Bhaban auditorium in the capital. The meeting focused on ensuring regular waste management services and quick removal of sacrificial waste during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. Expressing dissatisfaction over alleged irregularities and public suffering caused by some service providers, the DSCC administrator said complaints had been received from different areas that some organisations were charging extra money and failing to collect waste daily. “This will not be tolerated under any circumstances. A maximum of Tk 100 per month can be collected from each flat or household, and the payment must be taken through authorised receipts,” he said. Among the key decisions and directives adopted at the meeting were immediate administrative action, including licence cancellation, if any organisation is found charging more than the fixed Tk 100 fee; ensuring “same-day removal of same-day waste” so that no garbage remains piled up in any area; special Eid-ul-Azha preparedness, including cancellation of leave for cleanliness workers and relevant officials during the three Eid days until all wards are cleared of waste; mandatory field supervision by PCSP contractors along with adequate deployment of vans and manpower; maintaining courteous behaviour with residents and encouraging cleaners to perform duties in clean attire as much as possible; and launching mobile court drives against households that dump waste on roads or in canals instead of designated collection points. The DSCC administrator also said waste management is not merely a civic service but a humanitarian and social responsibility. He warned that strict action would be taken in accordance with DSCC laws if any contractor violates the terms of agreement. Senior DSCC officials and representatives of primary waste collection agencies attended the meeting.

Intex Bangladesh 2026 is being supported by several industry associations and business chambers, including the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BGCCI), US-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry (USBCCI), Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), and Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA), among others.

In a major push to decentralise sustainable industrialisation, Bangladesh Bank has established a special Tk 1,000 crore refinancing fund dedicated to making rural and local industries environment-friendly. Under this scheme, entrepreneurs will be able to access credit at an interest rate of maximum 5 percent. The Sustainable Finance Department of the central bank issued a circular in this regard on Monday. According to the directive, this amount has been carved out of the central bank's existing Tk 5,000 crore Green Transformation Fund (GTF) specifically to support grassroots and localised industrial growth. The fund is designed to finance the import of environment-friendly machinery or the purchase of locally manufactured green equipment. Eligible sectors for financing include renewable energy (installation of solar and wind power systems), resource management (energy efficiency, water conservation, and wastewater management), waste management (recycling activities and waste-to-energy projects) and work environment (-improving factory safety and occupational health standards). The central bank has structured the fund to be highly attractive for both lenders and borrowers. The borrower interest rate has been capped at a maximum of 5 percent. Participating banks will receive funds from the central bank at a mere 1 percent interest. An individual entrepreneur can borrow up to Tk 5 crore and banks can provide up to 80 percent of the total import or purchase cost. The loan term ranges from two to five years, including a maximum six-month grace period. Eligibility and Mandatory Green Criteria To ensure the funds achieve their environmental goals, the central bank has set a mandatory condition: at least 10 percent of the total electricity used in the financed project must be sourced from renewable energy, such as solar power. Eligible Banks All state-owned commercial banks are eligible to distribute these loans. Private and foreign commercial banks must maintain a non-performing loan (NPL) ratio below 20 percent to participate. Loan defaulters (individuals or institutions) are strictly prohibited from accessing this facility. Impact on Local Industries Bangladesh Bank believes this initiative will significantly bolster the capacity and competitiveness of local industries. By lowering the cost of green technology, the fund is expected to accelerate the transition of small and medium-scale rural enterprises into sustainable, resource-efficient entities, aligning with the national goal of achieving a green economy.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Monday said industrialisation is needed alongside the creation of jobs for the employment of the large number of youths in the country. “Youths constitute a large portion of the country's total population. It is not possible to ensure employment for this vast number of young people only through jobs. Industrialisation is needed,” he said. The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the PRAN-RFL Job Fair at the Lalmonirhat Stadium as the chief guest, according to a PID handout. Dulu said industrialisation will not only create earning opportunities for young people but also accelerate the country’s overall progress. Referring to Lalmonirhat’s agricultural potential, he said the district has highly fertile land where rice, maize and potatoes are produced in abundance. The minister called upon industrial entrepreneurs to establish agriculture-based industries in Lalmonirhat district. PRAN-RFL Group organised the job fair on the request from the minister, aiming to provide employment opportunities to 1,000 skilled and unskilled youths from the district.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday held a meeting on improving the living standards of salt farmers in the country. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat, said a release issued by the PM’s Press Wing. It said the meeting stressed ensuring fair prices for salt farmers and discussed various measures to improve their livelihoods. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, Additional Commerce Secretary Abdur Rahim Khan and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Chairman Md Saiful Islam, among others, attended the meeting.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump will hold extensive talks on key issues related to China-US relations, as well as world peace and development, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday. Speaking at a regular press briefing, Guo Jiakun said the two leaders are expected to exchange views on a wide range of bilateral and global issues during Trump's state visit to China from May 13 to 15. The visit will be the first by a sitting US president to China in nine years. Guo said Xi and Trump last met in October 2025 in Busan, where they discussed ways to strengthen communication and cooperation. He said direct engagement between the two presidents plays a vital strategic role in guiding relations between the world’s two largest economies. China is ready to work with the United States on the basis of equality, mutual respect and shared benefit to expand cooperation, properly manage differences and bring greater stability and certainty to an increasingly uncertain world, the spokesperson added.

The High Commission of India in Dhaka on Sunday hosted an interaction with a Bangladeshi media delegation, following their visit to India on May 3-9 as part of a special training programme arranged by the government of India. During the session, Deputy High Commissioner Pawankumar Badhe reviewed the visit of the media delegation, which comprised of members of Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) and journalists who cover economic and diplomatic affairs. DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Emrul Kayesh were also present.  During the visit to New Delhi and Mumbai, the delegation interacted with senior government leaders, including Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, think tank, media persons, business chamber and technology experts. The visit of the media delegation is part of the long-standing tradition of capacity-building and exchange initiatives between India and Bangladesh, aimed at fostering people-to-people contacts between the two countries, said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

US President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to China from May 13 to 15 is being viewed as a strategically significant move aimed at improving relations between the world’s two largest economies amid rising geopolitical and technological tensions. According to Zhu Chenge, a researcher at the Institute of American Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, direct engagement between national leaders remains the most effective way to stabilise China-US relations during periods of uncertainty and competition. In an article published by a Chinese state-owned media outlet, Zhu said head-of-state diplomacy has historically played a vital role in managing differences between Beijing and Washington and preventing strategic miscalculations. He noted that relations between the two countries over the past nine years have experienced trade disputes, technological rivalry and geopolitical tensions, making the upcoming summit particularly important. The article recalled that previous meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump helped reopen communication channels, expand cooperation and reduce areas of confrontation. Zhu argued that routine diplomatic exchanges alone are insufficient to manage the complexity of China-US relations, stressing that direct leader-to-leader communication is necessary to clarify strategic intentions, define core interests and maintain stability. The commentary also highlighted growing global uncertainty, including instability in the Middle East, risks to global energy supplies and trade routes, and intensifying strategic competition in the Asia-Pacific region. It further pointed to expanding technological competition between China and the US, particularly in sectors such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. According to the article, Trump’s visit is expected to focus on strategic dialogue, including discussions on differences, red lines and future cooperation between the two powers. Zhu said both countries have already made progress in areas such as tariffs and trade negotiations and gained a clearer understanding of each other’s strategic goals, creating favourable conditions for the upcoming meeting. However, he cautioned that deeper challenges remain, including the need for clearer communication regarding cooperation, better understanding of China’s core interests by the US, and joint management of risks arising from major-power competition in the age of AI. The article said any new strategic understandings reached during the visit could provide long-term guidance for China-US relations and contribute to greater global stability. Zhu added that while differences between the two countries will continue, mature major-power relations depend on coexistence despite disagreements, maintaining strategic guardrails and expanding cooperation where possible. He also stressed the importance of policy continuity in the US, arguing that China’s development should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat and that cooperation between the two nations serves the interests of both peoples.

In a significant move to ease international travel for Bangladeshis, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has allowed the remittance of mandatory visa bonds and refundable security deposits required by foreign embassies, high commissions, and other visa authorities. The central bank issued a circular on Sunday, instructing Authorized Dealer (AD) banks to facilitate such payments on behalf of visa applicants. According to the new directive, banks are now permitted to issue international or virtual cards in the name of the applicant, specifically for this purpose. These cards can be pre-loaded with the necessary bond or security deposit amount. Furthermore, existing international cardholders can reload their cards under their travel quota to cover these specific costs. However, the central bank emphasized that these funds must exclusively be used for visa-related financial requirements. A key clause in the circular mandates the swift repatriation of these funds once the relevant embassy or authority refunds the bond or security deposit. “Banks are required to maintain separate registries to track these transactions. They must regularly monitor and report the progress of fund returns to the central bank,” stated in the circular. Before remitting any funds, banks must verify several essential documents, including-a valid passport of the applicant, a formal requirement letter or invoice from the embassy or relevant authority, and references or acknowledgment letters related to the visa application. The central bank clarified that these transactions can be processed through Exporter’s Retention Quota (ERQ) accounts, Resident Foreign Currency Deposit (RFCD) accounts, or international cards issued against such accounts. Industry insiders believe this decision will remove a major bottleneck for Bangladeshi travelers, students, and professionals applying to countries that require financial guarantees as a prerequisite for visa approval, making the overall process more transparent and accessible.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Monday said Bangladesh-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor will open new avenues for educational and research cooperation between the two countries and further strengthen bilateral academic relations. “The relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan in the education sector are getting stronger day by day. This programme will play an important role in the progress of the relations between the two countries in the future,” he said. The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the second phase of the Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships under the corridor as well as the Pakistan Education Expo 2026 at a city hotel. Organised by the Pakistani High Commission in Dhaka in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the expo brought together representatives of 20 leading Pakistani universities and institutions to showcase scholarship opportunities and higher education opportunities for students from Bangladesh. Pakistani High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider and Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khaleque were present at the event, said a PID handout. The Education Minister hoped that cooperation between the two countries in teacher training and research, alongside scholarships for students, will further expand in the future. Praising the quality of Pakistani universities, he said Bangladeshi students are getting the opportunity to pursue higher education without bearing educational expenses, which is very commendable. Milon said the monthly scholarships, being given to students for housing and living, will help them focus fully on their studies. He visited stalls set up by various Pakistani universities and wished success for the second phase of the Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships. Pakistani envoy Imran described the initiative as a landmark step towards building enduring academic and institutional linkages between Bangladesh and Pakistan. He noted that Bangladeshi students have already commenced studies at prominent Pakistani universities under the first phase and expressed confidence that enhanced educational exchanges will further strengthen bilateral relations and people-to-people ties. Following Dhaka, similar Education Expos will also be organised in Barishal (12 May 2026), Rajshahi (14 May 2026), Sylhet (17 May 2026), Chattogram (18 May 2026) and Rangpur (20 May 2026) to facilitate greater outreach to students across Bangladesh, according to the Pakistani High Commission. Under the scholarship initiative, a plan has been taken to provide opportunities for 500 Bangladeshi students to study in Pakistan over the next five years in phases. In the first phase, 74 Bangladeshi students were already selected through examinations and awarded scholarships for higher education in Pakistan.

BRAC has said that nearly 26 million people across Bangladesh received services and support through its programmes in 2025, with women accounting for two-thirds of the direct beneficiaries. The development organisation shared the information while publishing its 2025 Annual Report at a press meet held at BRAC Centre in Mohakhali on Monday, said a press release of BRAC. According to the report, more than 19 million women and over 2,23,000 persons with disabilities received support through BRAC initiatives covering health, education, financial inclusion, disaster response, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), climate adaptation, migration and skills development. Of the people reached directly by BRAC, two out of every three were women. Support was provided across a wide range of sectors, including health, education, financial inclusion, disaster and crisis response, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), climate change adaptation, migration, and skills development. Over the next five years, BRAC aims to create employment opportunities for 1 million people, support nearly 1.9 million students in overcoming learning loss, and further expand its ultra-poor graduation programme. Asif Saleh, Executive Director at BRAC, presented key highlights from the report and responded to questions from journalists. In his remarks, Asif Saleh outlined BRAC’s future strategic direction, stating that over the next five years, the organisation will operate based on five core principles. These include placing women and young people at the centre of its work, working as part of the community, reaching those at the very margins first, building national capacity in partnership with the government, and harnessing the full strength of the BRAC family across all of its initiatives. Asif Saleh said that BRAC’s goal is to develop innovative solutions to address evolving social challenges and emerging needs. He noted that through new initiatives in mental health, day-care services, skills development, and technology-enabled healthcare, BRAC will continue contributing to more integrated and sustainable development in the years ahead. He also said that BRAC is becoming increasingly self-reliant through a combination of its microfinance programme, social enterprises, and limited donor support. He also said that BRAC has reaffirmed its commitment to working as a self-sustaining, accountable, and forward-looking development organisation under its next five-year strategic plan. The new plan will prioritise women, young people, and the most marginalised communities, while expanding work on employment, education, healthcare, financial inclusion, agriculture, and climate resilience. In his welcome remarks, KAM Morshed, Senior Director (Advocacy, Communications and Engagement) at BRAC, said that accountability to the people of the country is not merely a slogan for BRAC, but a practice deeply embedded in its work. He noted that during COVID-19, floods, and other natural and human-induced disasters, as well as in moments of national opportunity, BRAC has consistently stood beside communities with commitment and responsiveness. Although BRAC’s presence extends across the globe, he added, people and their participation remain at the heart of its work. AFM Shahidur Rahman, Director (MEAL, Risk Management, Safeguarding and Social Compliance), presented a summary of the annual report. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam on Monday said the government has taken a plan to construct the 2nd Padma Bridge likely to be at the Daulatdia-Paturia point. “We are going to construct the 2nd Padma Bridge. The feasibility study has already been completed. We are now discussing the financing issue and carrying out other preliminary preparations,” he said. The minister came up with the remarks after a preparatory meeting at the Secretariat on ensuring safe travel during upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. He said there are three proposals regarding the bridge, with the Daulatdia-Paturia route topping the list.

Local government, rural development and co-operatives minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the recruitment of women to the village police would make the local government system more people-friendly and effective. “To ensure justice at the village level, make the local government system more effective, increase women's participation, and strengthen the institutional capacity of village courts, female members will be recruited to the village police,” he said. The minister said this at a meeting with a delegation of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Secretariat. The four-member UNDP delegation was led by Deputy Resident Representative in Bangladesh Sonali Dayaratne. During the meeting, they discussed the ongoing activities, progress and institutional capacity-building of the village court project. They put emphasis on strengthening the role of village courts to ensure accessible, speedy and low-cost justice for rural people. The LGRD Minister said village courts have been playing a significant role in resolving rural disputes in the region for more than a century. He said the quick settlement of minor disputes at the local level would reduce pressure on formal courts and ensure easier access to justice for the general people. Fakhrul stressed increasing women’s participation in the local government system, saying female member of the village police could play an important role in addressing social issues involving women and children. He said enhancing the capacity of local government bodies is essential for implementation of various government development and social protection programmes effectively. In this regard, the minister cited, technical and institutional support from development partners could play an important role in enhancing the capacity of the local government bodies. Both sides expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation between the Bangladesh government and the UNDP to improve the effectiveness of village courts, ensure justice at the grassroots level and promote women’s empowerment. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed a three-member inquiry committee to look into Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Dr AKM Wali Ullah, Additional Secretary (Administration) of the ministry, will head the committee. The other members include former national captain Habibul Bashar and Supreme Court lawyer and sports organiser Barrister Faisal Dastagir. According to a notice signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Aonggyajai Marma, the panel must submit its findings within 15 working days. The 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, proceeded without Bangladesh after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) withdrew from the tournament.  Citing safety concerns, the then interim government directed the BCB to pull out after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected a request to move Bangladesh’s matches from India to Sri Lanka. The security friction originated prior to the tournament when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL following threats from extremist groups. While the BCB, then led by Aminul Islam, expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of players, coaching staff, and traveling journalists, the ICC maintained that security arrangements were sufficient.

Pakistan on Monday summoned a senior Afghan diplomat and lodged a formal protest over a suicide attack in the northwestern district of Bannu that killed 15 police officers. The attack took place late Saturday in Bannu, near the border with Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities blamed the attack on Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban or TTP. In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan said the protest was conveyed to Afghanistan’s charge d'affaires in Islamabad. It said a detailed investigation, along with evidence and technical intelligence, suggested that the attack was planned by militants based in Afghanistan. Pakistan also told Kabul that it reserved the right to take decisive action against those responsible for the attack. There was no immediate response from the Afghan authorities. According to police, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a security post in Bannu. Several gunmen then launched an assault, triggering a gunfight. Some officers were killed in the exchange of fire, while others died when part of the building collapsed. Four officers were also injured. A newly formed militant group, Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistani officials say the group is a front for the TTP. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban administration in Afghanistan of allowing TTP militants to use Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul has denied the allegations. Militant violence has increased in Pakistan in recent years, with many of the attacks linked to the TTP. Relations between Islamabad and Kabul have remained tense, with border clashes since late February leaving hundreds dead. Although peace talks were held in April with mediation by China, occasional cross-border skirmishes have continued.

A businessman was rescued from a hostage situation in Bijoynagar Upazila after police and local residents acted on information received through the national emergency number 999. Police arrested two brothers, Anwar Hossain, 40, and Shahnur Rahman, from the spot, said Rajib Sarker, Officer-in-Charge of Bijoynagar Police Station on Monday. Both are sons of Lavlur Rahman of Alabhidpur village and are currently in police custody. Lavlur Rahman was also named as an accused in the case, though he was later released, the OC added. A written complaint was filed by Gopal Roy, father of the victim Rupak Roy, which was recorded by police on Monday morning. According to police and local sources, the incident occurred on Sunday morning when Rupak Roy, a resident of Saha Para in Alabhidpur village, was going to his business at Amtali Bazar. He was allegedly lured to Anwar Hossain’s house on the pretext of sending money via bKash. Once there, he was tied up, beaten, and forced to sign blank stamp papers. The attackers also attempted to abduct him and demanded Tk 20 lakh from his family. He was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons, leaving him seriously injured. Meanwhile, Rupak’s family received a misleading message from his phone claiming he was in Brahmanbaria and had lost his phone. Later, upon discovering that he was being held hostage, they contacted 999 and informed police. Police, along with locals, rushed to the scene and rescued him. Rupak Roy was later treated at the upazila health complex. His family alleged that the accused continued to issue threats even after being detained. OC Rajib Sarker said legal procedures are underway to send them to court.

Public health experts and physicians on Monday urged the government to increase tobacco product prices effectively in the upcoming FY2026–27 national budget to reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Bangladesh. They said around 71 percent of annual deaths in Bangladesh are caused by non-communicable diseases, while tobacco use is responsible for nearly 14 percent of NCD-related deaths in the country. The demand was raised at a press conference titled “Effective Tobacco Price Increase to Reduce the Risk of Non-Communicable Diseases: Physicians’ Budget Proposals for FY2026–27”, organized by United Forum Against Tobacco and National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh at National Press Club. The program was chaired by Brig Gen (Retd.) Prof. Md. Yunusur Rahman, Director of National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute. Among others, public health expert Dr Mushtaq Hossain, Prof Safiun Nahin Shimul of the Institute of Health Economics at the University of Dhaka, and Dr Muhammad Sakhawat Hossain, Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital, spoke at the event. Presenting the keynote paper, Dr Aruna Sarkar, Coordinator of the Tobacco Control Program, said tobacco use remains one of the leading risk factors for cancer, heart disease, stroke, and chronic respiratory diseases in Bangladesh. She noted that nearly 37.8 million adults in Bangladesh currently use tobacco products and around 200,000 people die every year from tobacco-related diseases. The annual economic loss caused by tobacco-related health and environmental damage is estimated at nearly Tk 87,000 crore, which is more than double the revenue earned from the tobacco sector. At the press conference, physicians proposed merging the low- and medium-tier cigarette categories and fixing the retail price of a 10-stick cigarette pack at Tk 100. They also proposed imposing a specific supplementary duty of Tk 4 per pack. In addition, they recommended increasing the retail prices of high-tier and premium-tier cigarette packs to Tk 150 and Tk 200 respectively. Prof Safiun Nahin Shimul said the existing tobacco tax structure in Bangladesh is complex and ineffective from a public health perspective. He explained that the four-tier cigarette pricing system allows smokers to switch to cheaper brands instead of quitting, limiting the effectiveness of tax measures. He also said the small price difference between low- and medium-tier cigarettes makes tobacco products more affordable for young people and low-income groups. Dr Mushtaq Hossain said implementing the proposed tax and price measures could both reduce tobacco consumption and generate over Tk 85,000 crore in revenue, which would be around Tk 44,000 crore higher than the previous fiscal year. He added that the additional revenue could be used to strengthen the healthcare system, improve primary healthcare services, and address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. Brig Gen (Retd.) Prof Md Yunusur Rahman said increasing tobacco prices through effective taxation is globally recognized as one of the most effective tobacco control measures. He said the proposed measures could encourage nearly 500,000 adults to quit smoking and help prevent premature deaths helped prevent the premature deaths of approximately 185,408 adults and 185,335 youths. Journalists from different media outlets and representatives of anti-tobacco organizations attended the press conference.

The High Court on Monday deferred until May 14 the delivery of its order on bail petitions filed by Chinmoy Krishna Das, suspended ISKCON leader and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagran Jote, in four cases. The HC bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher postponed the ruling after Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque sought time to submit additional documents related to the cases. Earlier on Sunday, the same bench rejected Chinmoy’s bail petition in a case filed with Chattogram Kotwali Police Station over the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. Alif was beaten and hacked to death during clashes that erupted near the court building in Chattogram on November 26, 2024 following the denial of bail to Chinmoy, who arrested from Dhaka the previous day, in a sedition case. Following the murder, Alif’s father Jamal Uddin filed a murder case naming 31 people. In May last year, Chinmoy was shown arrested in four additional cases. On October 25, 2024, a large gathering of the Sanatani community was held in Chattogram under the leadership of Chinmoy. On October 31, a sedition case was filed against 19 people, including Chinmoy, on charge of belittling the national flag. On November 22 of the year, another large rally was held in Rangpur under the leadership of Chinmoy.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) on Monday separately met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meetings were held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat in the afternoon, said his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon. He said the delegations from the central committees of BGMEA and BKMEA met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman separately. “They raised various issues related to their sectors. The Prime Minister listened to their statements with keen interest and also exchanged views with them,” Rumon added.  

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has released the full text of its verdict overturning a High Court ruling that had declared the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party illegal. The four-member Appellate Division bench, led by the then Chief Justice, delivered the judgment on June 1 last year. The full copy of the verdict was published on Monday. The Election Commission granted Jamaat registration as a political party in November 2008. In 2009, Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri and 25 others filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the registration. After a final hearing, a three-member bench of the High Court declared Jamaat’s registration illegal by majority opinion on August 1, 2013. The court also granted a certificate for appeal against the verdict, which was later converted into an appeal. Jamaat also filed a regular leave-to-appeal petition that year. Following the High Court verdict, Jamaat sought a stay order, but the then Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division, Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, rejected the plea on August 5, 2013. Subsequently, on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission officially cancelled Jamaat’s registration through a gazette notification. On November 19, 2023, the Appellate Division dismissed Jamaat’s appeal and leave-to-appeal petitions against the High Court verdict after no lawyer appeared on behalf of the party. Jamaat filed separate petitions following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, seeking restoration of the appeal and leave-to-appeal by condoning delays. After hearing the matter, the Appellate Division restored the petitions. The appeal and leave-to-appeal were later included in the Appellate Division’s hearing schedule, and hearings began on December 3, 2024. Jamaat also filed an application regarding the allocation of its electoral symbol. The court subsequently tagged the application with the appeal and leave-to-appeal for hearing. After concluding hearings, the Appellate Division delivered its verdict on June 1 last year. During the previous Awami League government, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on August 1, 2024, banning Jamaat and its student wing – Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. Following the formation of an interim government on August 8, 2024 after the fall of the AL government, the ban on Jamaat and Shibir was withdrawn.

Heavy rain and deteriorating light frustrated both sides on the penultimate day in Mirpur, as Bangladesh reached 152-3 at early stumps in the first Test against Pakistan.  Despite a significant loss of play, the hosts extended their overall lead to 179 runs, leaving the first Test poised for a high-stakes final day. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday pointed to alleged inflated spending and corruption in several mega projects, including Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Karnaphuli Tunnel and Padma Bridge, based on audit findings that exposed widespread misuse of public funds. Speaking at a meeting with senior police officials at the Prime Minister’s Office at Tejgaon, he citied findings from some audit reports presented to him by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). The Prime Minister said the current government inherited a “fragile” state structure and economy after assuming office. “When the current government took responsibility, we found almost every sector in a very vulnerable condition. We received the country in a situation similar to that of a war-ravaged nation,” he said. Tarique Rahman said he was not presenting the issues politically but was sharing realities revealed in official audit findings. “A few days ago, the Auditor General came to me. I am not presenting this politically; I am presenting the reality. I am not blaming anyone politically. We are citizens of this country, and your children are growing up here, which is why I am raising these issues,” he said. The Prime Minister said the CAG shared several audit observations with him, some of which had also appeared in newspapers. Referring to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, he mentioned alleged excessive costs for furnishing residential facilities built for foreign personnel. “He (CAG) told me that fully furnished quarters were constructed for foreigners there. A pillow was purchased at a cost of Tk 80,000. As an ordinary person, can you imagine a pillow costing Tk 80,000 anywhere in the world?” Tarique Rahman said. He also alleged that dressing tables worth an estimated Tk 30,000 to Tk 35,000 were shown in audit records as costing Tk 4 lakh to Tk 5 lakh each. On May 5, Comptroller and Auditor General Md Nurul Islam submitted 38 audit reports for the 2021-22 fiscal year to the Prime Minister. Comparing the Rooppur project with a similar project in a neighbouring country, Tarique Rahman said, “A similar project in our neighbouring country reportedly cost around Tk 14,000 crore, whereas the cost of Bangladesh’s Rooppur project ultimately stood at nearly Tk 96,000 crore.” Referring to the Karnaphuli Tunnel project, he alleged that several luxurious buildings or apartments were constructed on the other side of the tunnel despite no apparent necessity. The Prime Minister also claimed the audit investigation found irregularities in landscaping expenses linked to the project. “The audit investigation found that trees were supposed to be planted on both sides – before entering and exiting the Karnaphuli Tunnel. But no trees were found there, although Tk 50 crore had been withdrawn in the name of planting them,” he said. Tarique Rahman also referred to alleged corruption linked to development projects in Pirojpur and Patuakhali districts. He said lawmakers from the region met him regarding stalled Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) works, particularly road construction projects. “After making inquiries, I learned that Tk 35,000 crore disappeared from just one ministry — the LGED Ministry — through paperwork alone without any work being completed,” the Prime Minister said. He also came to know that Tk 6,000 was missing in a single district alone covering several departments. “There are many more such incidents. These incidents happened. Reality is reality, and we cannot avoid it even if we want to,” he added. Tarique Rahman said he mentioned the audit findings while responding to various demands and proposals raised by police officials regarding accommodation, transport and IT facilities. “You spoke about housing problems, transportation and proposals for new IT units. All these require funding. We want to address these problems because better facilities will help you provide better public service,” he said. PM urges police to remain united beyond ideological differences The Prime Minister said inflated project costs and loans taken for those projects created financial burdens on citizens. “The debt taken for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project at four times the cost has now become a burden on every citizen, including those of you present here,” he said. Comparing infrastructure costs, he referred to India’s Bhupen Hazarika Bridge, saying it was completed at around Tk 14,000-15,000 crore, while the Padma Bridge cost approximately Tk 54,000-56,000 crore. “Ultimately, the burden of these loans falls on 20 crore people. Had these unnecessary expenditures not occurred, we could have done much more in sectors like police, Army, Air Force, Navy, education and health,” Tarique Rahman said, adding: “But this is the reality we now have to deal with.” The Prime Minister delivered a directive speech to police officials at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office as part of Police Week-2026. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir also addressed the programme.    

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir has highlighted the current government's commitment to creating a comprehensive national security architecture, which is pivotal to pursuing a robust foreign policy. He made the remarks while delivering keynote address at a policy roundtable titled “Bangladesh First: A Foreign Policy Outlook for A New Bangladesh” organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) recently. Adviser Humaiun outlined the government’s “Bangladesh First” foreign policy doctrine, emphasising strategic autonomy, economic diplomacy, balanced global engagement, regional connectivity, and climate diplomacy. BIPSS President Maj Gen ANM Muniruzzaman (Retd) moderated the roundtable and stressed the need for a pragmatic, balanced, and nationally driven foreign policy amid growing geopolitical, economic, and technological challenges. An engaging discussion followed with the audience, which included, among others, Members of Parliament, diplomats, academics, policymakers, and media representatives. Senior Research Fellow at BIPSS Shafqat Munir described the “Bangladesh First” doctrine as a return to strategic pragmatism centred on Bangladesh’s national interests and sovereignty. He emphasised that given the growing geopolitical uncertainty and shifting global dynamics, Bangladesh requires a confident, strategically agile, and professionally driven foreign policy outlook anchored in long-term national interests.

Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad on Monday said the government would not tolerate any oppression, injustice, cruelty or torture against minorities or followers of other religions in the country. “I would even leave the ministry if necessary, but will not tolerate any oppression or injustice against minorities or people of other faiths,” he said while speaking at the ‘BSRF Dialogue’ organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum at the Secretariat Media Centre. Replying to a question on the alleged persecution of minority Muslims in India and whether he would raise the issue with the Indian government, Kaikobad said India is a large democratic country and expressed hope that it would ensure equal rights and security for minorities. “I respect India because it values democracy. But I will respect it even more if minorities there are accepted as part of the nation and provided with proper security and protection,” he said. He, however, stressed that incidents occurring in India would not be allowed to happen in Bangladesh. The programme was chaired by BSRF President Masudul Hoque and moderated by its General Secretary Ubaidullah Badal.  

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman is now visiting the United States where he will join an informal interactive dialogue as part of the election of the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 81st session. The President of the eightieth session of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, will convene the informal interactive dialogues with the candidates on May 13 (10am and 3pm) in New York, a senior official told UNB. The dialogues will be broadcast live on UN WebTV. Civil society organisations and individuals were invited to engage in the informal interactive dialogue by submitting questions to the candidates. Questions were received through the registration of participants who will engage either in person or through video messages. Dr Khalilur is a candidate from the Asia–Pacific region with over thirty years of experience with the United Nations, both as a representative of Bangladesh to the General Assembly and as a senior official at the UN secretariat in New York and at UNCTAD in Geneva. Over the years, he has actively participated in sixteen UNGA sessions engaging directly in its negotiations, high-level meetings and follow-up processes. Throughout his career, Dr Khalilur has worked extensively on development issues facing the Global South, including those related to Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Land-Locked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). “I am convinced that our world now needs a more effective and responsive multilateralism. By working together, we can build a more robust multilateral system that commands the trust of Member States and delivers tangible benefits for all,” said the Foreign Minister in his vision statement. The Foreign Minister said he believes that he has the combination of knowledge, experience and leadership capabilities to effectively lead the General Assembly to advance this overarching goal. The election of the President of the United Nations General Assembly for the 81st session will be held on June 2 in the General Assembly Hall, UNHQs, in line with Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure. In accordance with the established regional rotation, the President of the eighty first session of the General Assembly will be elected from the Asia Pacific Group. Following the withdrawal of the Palestinian candidature, Bangladesh will now compete with Cyprus. The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will open at historic crossroads, Dr Khalilur said, adding that eight decades after the UN Charter was signed in San Francisco, their shared system of multilateral cooperation faces profound challenges. “Yet this moment also presents unprecedented opportunities to renew its promise for “we the peoples” in the twenty-first century,” he said.  

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said a specialised cyber police unit will be formed to combat cybercrimes, online rumours and misinformation amid changing crime patterns in the digital age.   He made the announcement while addressing senior police officials at a programme marking Police Week 2026 at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.   The minister said the government would maintain a strict ‘zero tolerance’ policy against corruption within the police force and would not compromise on discipline and the chain of command.   Highlighting the government’s modernisation plans for the police, the minister said two new police training academies would be established at Jungle Salimpur in Chattogram to enhance professionalism.   “One academy will be for the elite force and the other for the general force,” he said, adding that a separate law would be enacted to ensure transparency and accountability in the operations of elite forces.   He also said steps would be taken to modernise and enhance the capacity of central and divisional police hospitals.   A full-fledged Police Sports Complex would also be constructed subject to land availability, he said.   Calling for greater transparency in operational activities, the minister instructed police authorities to expand the use of body-worn cameras.   “Police are being trained to follow the minimum use of force policy in line with United Nations standards. Law enforcers must be strategic in tackling crimes, but human rights must not be violated under any circumstances,” he said.   The minister also directed police officials to ensure quick delivery of public services including police clearance certificates and online general diary (GD) services.   He stressed enhancing the capacity of Tourist Police to strengthen the image of the country’s tourism sector.   Referring to the government’s electoral pledges, Salahuddin said stable law and order is a prerequisite for implementing the 31-point election manifesto.   “Every police station must be transformed into a centre of public service under the motto ‘Police are the people and  people are the police,’” he said.   He also emphasised preventive policing to stop crimes before they occur in line with modern policing doctrines.   Senior police officials, including additional IGPs, DIGs, additional DIGs and police superintendents, attended the meeting where future plans for police modernisation were discussed in light of the prime minister’s directives.   END/UNB/MJ-MAS/FH/1657 Hrs    

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on Monday urged the government to prioritise the development of inland waterway infrastructure to reduce the cost of doing business, calling for planned dredging, riverbank recovery and private sector involvement under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed made the call during a meeting with Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee at the Secretariat. Taskeen Ahmed said as a riverine nation, Bangladesh's inland waterways have historically been the most cost-effective means of transporting industrial raw materials and finished goods, yet their full potential remains underutilised due to siltation and illegal river encroachment. “We need to prioritise riverbank recovery, planned dredging and necessary infrastructural development so that the business community can benefit from cost-effective and efficient trade logistics,” he said. The DCCI President expressed optimism about the government's plan to excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals over the next five years, saying the initiative will significantly boost inland water transport, ease business costs and simultaneously improve irrigation, agricultural productivity and overall economic growth. He also highlighted the strategic value of an approximately 112-kilometre circular waterway connecting the Buriganga, Turag, Balu, Shitalakkhya and Dhaleshwari rivers around the capital, describing it as a viable alternative transport corridor that could help ease Dhaka's chronic traffic congestion. Responding positively, Minister Anee reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustainable development of inland waterways and said several initiatives have already been set in motion. He called on the private sector to actively participate in the nationwide canal excavation programme, noting that its successful completion will foster environment-friendly transport networks and stimulate local economic activity across the country. DCCI Senior Vice President Razeev H Chowdhury, Vice President Md Salem Sulaiman and acting Secretary General Dr AKM Asaudzzaman Patwary were also present at the meeting.    

The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) will organise a national workshop on Tuesday aimed at transforming Bangladesh’s higher education system into a more contemporary, inclusive and sustainable model. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the daylong workshop titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence,” as the chief guest at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University in the morning. This will be his first official programme at Dhaka University since assuming office as Prime Minister through the February 12 national election. The information was shared at a press conference held at the UGC conference room on Monday afternoon. UGC Chairman Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed, its members, secretary, directors and members of the workshop organising committee were present at the press conference. In his speech, Mamun Ahmed said the workshop will play an important role in improving the quality of higher education and developing internationally competent human resources. “It will also help shape the government’s future plans and policy directions regarding tertiary education,” he said. The UGS Chairman stressed the importance of ensuring a proper educational environment, saying a conducive atmosphere is essential for effective teaching and learning and for the overall development of students. He also highlighted the importance of governance and collaboration among government bodies and stakeholders in establishing and maintaining a strong education system. Policymakers, UGC members, vice-chancellors of different universities, teachers, researchers, representatives from industries and development stakeholders will participate in the workshop. Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin will attend the opening session as special guests with the UGC Chairman in the chair. Following the opening ceremony, five technical sessions will be held focusing on graduate employability, soft skills development and demand-driven education; industry-academia collaboration and global competitiveness; digital transformation, digital literacy and integration of artificial intelligence; teachers’ professional development, research excellence and internationalisation; and governance, quality assurance and institutional reforms. Discussions and recommendations will be formulated during the sessions. Organisers said a practical policy roadmap for higher education development will be prepared based on the opinions and recommendations of the participants. The closing session of the workshop will be attended by Dhaka University VC Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam as the chief guest. Among the special guests at the concluding session will be Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology VC Prof Dr ABM Badruzzaman, North South University VC Prof Dr Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, and State University of Bangladesh VC Pro Dr Md Akhter Hossain Khan.  

A cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak has reached the Canary Islands after several passengers and crew members were connected to confirmed and suspected infections. The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has so far been tied to three confirmed cases and five suspected ones. Among the confirmed cases are a Dutch woman who died, a British passenger receiving intensive care treatment in South Africa and a Swiss passenger being treated in Zurich, reports BBC. Suspected cases include a British national, a Dutch crew member and a German passenger. Two of them have been transferred to the Netherlands for treatment, while another remains in stable condition aboard a delayed evacuation flight. Although none of the suspected cases have tested positive yet, two individuals have shown symptoms associated with the virus. Two British passengers who left the ship earlier during its Atlantic voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde are currently isolating at home in the UK after possible exposure. According to the UK Health Security Agency, neither has developed symptoms. Meanwhile, health officials in the US states of Arizona and Georgia said they are monitoring three American passengers who disembarked before the vessel arrived in Cape Verde. None have shown signs of illness. Passengers remaining on board are undergoing medical assessments and are leaving the ship in stages based on nationality. Several Spanish and French travellers have already returned home, while countries including the UK have arranged special flights for their citizens. What is the Andes strain of hantavirus?Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses rather than a single disease. The virus family takes its name from a river in South Korea. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there are more than 20 hantavirus species, most of which are transmitted to humans through exposure to infected rodents such as rats and mice, especially via dried urine and droppings. One particular variant — the Andes strain — is believed capable of spreading between humans, though such transmission is considered rare. South African health authorities confirmed that the British passenger being treated in Johannesburg and the Dutch woman who died were infected with the Andes strain. The Andes virus is commonly found in Argentina and Chile. A major outbreak in Argentina in 2018 was linked to a social gathering where one infected individual is believed to have transmitted the virus to 34 people, resulting in 11 deaths. How does this affect response measures?The confirmation of the Andes strain has increased concerns that transmission may have occurred through close human contact on the ship in addition to possible exposure to rodents. As a precaution, passengers remaining aboard the vessel are being confined to their cabins to reduce contact. British nationals returning home are also expected to self-isolate. A WHO physician on board reported that no additional passengers had developed symptoms as of Saturday. Health experts say containing the outbreak will depend on strict measures including isolating infected individuals, monitoring close contacts, maintaining hand hygiene and following infection-control procedures. The exact source of the outbreak remains unclear. Earlier WHO findings suggested the first infected passengers had travelled through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay during a bird-watching tour that included areas inhabited by rodents known to carry the virus. Despite the outbreak, specialists say the overall risk to the global population remains very low, with no evidence so far of spread beyond the cruise ship. How does hantavirus spread?Hantavirus is usually transmitted through contact with rodent saliva, urine or droppings. People often become infected after inhaling virus particles that become airborne when contaminated rodent waste is disturbed. Infections can also occur through rodent bites. The Andes strain is currently the only known hantavirus capable of spreading between humans, and even then transmission is uncommon. Experts say person-to-person spread generally requires prolonged and close interaction with someone showing symptoms. WHO officials note that the virus does not spread in the same way as influenza or Covid-19, which are transmitted more easily through coughing or sneezing. What are the symptoms and how dangerous is it?Hantavirus can lead to two serious illnesses. The first is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which initially causes symptoms such as fever, fatigue and muscle pain. Patients may later experience headaches, chills, dizziness and abdominal problems. In severe cases, breathing difficulties can develop rapidly, requiring urgent medical care. The Andes strain is commonly associated with HPS, which carries a fatality rate of between 20 and 40 percent. The incubation period can range from one to eight weeks, making early detection more difficult. The second illness is Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which begins with flu-like symptoms but can progress to kidney damage, internal bleeding, low blood pressure and acute kidney failure. Is there a vaccine or treatment?There is currently no specific cure for hantavirus infections, although prompt medical treatment can improve survival chances. Supportive care may include oxygen therapy, ventilator support and dialysis for patients with kidney complications. Severely ill patients often require treatment in intensive care units. Researchers are also testing potential new treatments. No widely available vaccine exists yet, although some vaccines targeting local hantavirus strains are being used in China and South Korea.    

Highlighting the importance of safe, orderly, and regular migration, Bangladesh on Monday issued a stern warning to bring unscrupulous syndicates involved in illegal practices under the law. The warning came at a meeting on migration, mobility, and the Bangladesh situation held at the State Guest House Padma at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussion took place against the backdrop of recent deaths of Bangladeshi migrants in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting the perilous Bangladesh-Libya-Italy route through irregular channels.  Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, senior government officials, the Ambassador of Italy, the CDA a.i. of Libya, and the Chief of IOM Mission in Dhaka also took part in the discussion with Shama Obaed in chair. The State Minister highlighted the “zero tolerance” commitment of the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman toward illegal migration. At the session, Ambassador of Italy to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro informed that the European Union is going to enact a new regulation on asylum and migration in June 2026, under which the asylum process would become tougher for illegal migrants seeking legal status. The meeting discussed ways for the future expansion of safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways by equipping migrants with skills, language proficiency, and making regular pathways more attractive. The need to link skill training with employment opportunities and collaborate with employers in destination countries to establish employment-guaranteed migration frameworks was underlined for a well-managed regular migration pathway. The State Minister also opined that the Bangladeshi diaspora should be engaged so that they could contribute more through remittances, capital, expertise, and ideas imbued with the vision of “Bangladesh First” to push Bangladesh onto a development trajectory envisioned by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting ended with a general agreement among all partners to continue working together in close coordination to curb illegal migration, promote regular migration, and maintain a humane, regular, and rights-based approach throughout the migration process.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan on Monday urged city dwellers to remain vigilant and actively participate in dengue prevention efforts during the monsoon, stressing that it cannot be controlled without public involvement. “It is not possible to control dengue without the active participation of citizens,” he said, calling on residents to keep their surroundings clean and remove stagnant water from homes, yards, flower pots, buckets and other containers to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquito. The DNCC administrator came up with the call while talking to reporters after attending a programme held at the Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan-2. He also urged people to support the ongoing special campaign titled “Saturday’s commitment – let us clean our own homes.” Earlier in the day, Safiqul Islam handed over cheques for over Tk 92 lakh to 731 students as educational scholarships under the DNCC's Education and Merit Scholarship Policy-2017. Speaking at the programme as the chief guest, he said the scholarship programme is being carried out regularly to promote education and nurture students’ talent. The initiative aims to support meritorious students from low-income families and help them continue their education, he said. Safiqul Islam also encouraged students to prepare themselves as skilled human resources in different professions. Presiding over the programme, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mohamad Ashaduz Zaman said the scholarship programme is running under the 2017 policy guidelines. He said while 69 students received scholarships last year, the number has increased to 731 this year.

The 25th international conference of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) began in Chattogram on Monday. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hasan inaugurated the three-day conference as the chief guest, according to ISPR. Director of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), representatives of member states of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission, diplomats, and senior military and civil officials attended the conference organised by the Bangladesh Navy. Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, assistant chief of naval staff (operations) of the Bangladesh Navy and chairman of both the National Hydrographic Committee and the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission, chaired the event. In his inaugural speech, the Chief of Naval Staff underscored the need to establish a "National Hydrographer" as an independent hydrographic authority at the national level, in line with other maritime states around the world. He said the "National Hydrographer" would serve as a coordinating and regulatory authority for Bangladesh's overall hydrographic activities. "Such an initiative would strengthen maritime security by ensuring the safe navigation and movement of commercial and other seagoing vessels," he added. He further said that it would also play an important role in blue economy activities and coastal area management. The progress, achievements and future plans of various hydrographic activities of the participating countries were also presented. Besides, detailed discussions were held on mutual coordination, technical cooperation and training assistance in hydrographic activities among the countries of the North Indian Ocean region. Among the 15 regional commissions under the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the ‘North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission’, established in 2002, is one of them.    

Six children died with measles-like symptoms across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am Monday, pushing the number of suspected measles-related deaths to 350 since March 15, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). However, no new confirmed measles deaths were reported during the period, leaving the number of laboratory-confirmed fatalities unchanged at 65. With the latest figures, the combined nationwide death toll from confirmed measles and measles-like symptoms has climbed to 415. According to DGHS data, 1,341 new suspected measles cases were reported during the 24-hour period, taking the total number of suspected cases to 50,500. In addition, 118 new confirmed measles cases were recorded, bringing the total confirmed infections to 6,937. Since March 15, a total of 35,980 suspected measles patients have been hospitalised, of whom 31,992 have recovered, the DGHS added.

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain on Monday said the measles situation is expected to come under control within four weeks as vaccinated people will develop immunity during this period. The number of patients has already started declining, he said while talking to reporters after visiting Barishal Sadar Hospital in the morning. Measles vaccination was supposed to be administered every four years but the continuity was disrupted after 2020, leading to the current outbreak, he said The present government initially had no stock of measles vaccines but managed to procure them within a short time, he added. During his visit to Barishal Sadar Hospital, the minister first inspected the ticket counter and suspended an employee after finding him absent from duty. Later, he checked the attendance registers of doctors and spoke to patients receiving treatment. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) report, eleven more children died from measles and with measles-like symptoms across the country in 24 hours until 8:00 am Sunday, bringing the total number to 409 since March 15.  

Mango harvesting in Natore will officially begin on May 15 with the collection of Guti variety as the local administration announced the mango calendar on Monday. The schedule was unveiled at a meeting held with Deputy Commissioner Asma Shaheen in the chair at the conference room of her office. According to the calendar, harvesting of other mango varieties, including Gopalbhog, Rani Pochondo, Khirsapat, Langra, Amrapali, Fazli, Haribhanga, Gourmati, Bari-4 and Ashwina, will continue in phases from May 25 to August 10. Deputy Director of the Natore Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Habibul Islam Khan, mango orchard owners and traders from different parts of the district attended the meeting. Besides, strict instructions were issued against the artificial ripening of mangoes. The meeting also fixed May 17 for harvesting Muzaffarpuri litchis and May 25 for Bombay and China-3 varieties. However, litchis have already started appearing in local markets, with Habibul Islam describing those local varieties.    

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday urged police personnel to rise above differences of opinion and work together in the national interest. He made the call during a meeting with senior police officials on the third floor of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, said PM’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly. “This country belongs to all of us. We must work together to protect it. We may not all share the same ideology, but while working with the government, your personal beliefs or ideology should not be reflected in your official duties,” Shibly quoted the Prime Minister as saying. The Prime Minister also said differences of opinion should be reflected only through the ballot box. “Before that, we must all love this country and remain united in the interest of the nation,” he added. Tarique also said ensuring a “Safe Bangladesh” would guarantee a secure and better future for everyone. “Many of you have spoken about your hopes for the future of your wives and children. If we can all work together to ensure a safe Bangladesh, then everyone’s future will be secured. If Bangladesh becomes safe, we will all live well,” he added. After the programme marking Police Week-2026, the Prime Minister walked with police officials and exchanged greetings with them, making the remarks during informal conversations. The Prime Minister also took part in a photo session with police officials in front of the Tiger Gate of the PMO. Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman addressed police officials at a programme marking Police Week-2026 at Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon. During his speech, he gave various directives regarding law and order and asked police to treat criminals as criminals, regardless of their political identity. He also stressed that there would be no compromise with corruption, terrorism and misrule, and urged police officers to work in a people-oriented manner. Tarique reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing all pledges made in its election manifesto and the July Charter. Speaking about police welfare, the Prime Minister said the government would remain committed to ensuring the wellbeing of police personnel. “Honesty, merit and efficiency will be the key principles in recruitment, transfer and posting within the administration,” he said. Tarique acknowledged that police duties are not confined to fixed working hours, noting that police personnel work day and night including holidays. “The government cannot remain indifferent to ensuring the physical and mental wellbeing of police members. Therefore, every logical and necessary demand of yours will be implemented gradually, Inshallah,” he said. The Prime Minister said public perception of the government largely depends on the conduct and activities of the police. “Let us all move forward from our respective positions by making sacrifices for the country and its people as much as possible,” he added.    

At the first Cabinet meeting West Bengal Chief Minister of Suvendu Adhikari announced that the process of transferring land to the Border Security Force for completing fencing along the India–Bangladesh border would start immediately and be finished within 45 days. He said the decision was taken as part of the government’s priority to speed up border security measures and address concerns over cross-border movement. The Chief Minister added that once the land is fully handed over, the BSF will be able to complete the remaining fencing work, which the government believes will help curb illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. The announcement follows a key election promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the campaign, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah had pledged that all required land for fencing would be transferred within 45 days if the party came to power. The issue of infiltration was a major theme in the recent Assembly elections, with the BJP accusing the former state administration led by the Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of delaying border fencing due to political considerations. The TMC, however, has argued that land acquisition is complex and requires balancing local livelihoods and administrative concerns. West Bengal shares a long international border of over 4,000 km with Bangladesh, of which most has already been fenced, while a few hundred kilometres still remain unfinished, particularly in difficult terrain. The state government emphasized that while operational control of border security remains with the BSF under the central government, cooperation from the state is essential for land-related clearances. At least 50 workers of a garment factory in the Bhogra area of Gazipur city fell ill on Monday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday at the factory. Sixteen workers were admitted to different hospitals, including Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, while others took primary treatment. Witnesses said authorities of Panasia Clothing Ltd arranged a milad mahfil at the factory in the morning where workers participated. While a mujanat was underway at the end of the religious programme, workers started falling sick one after another, creating panic among fellow workers. In total, around workers 50 fell ill. They were immediately taken to hospital. Director of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital Dr Md Aminul Islam said there was no major concern over the condition of the sick workers. He termed the incident as a case of mass psychogenic illness and said the patients were expected to recover gradually after treatment. Following the incident, the authorities declared the factory closed for the day.  

President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to China may face a more restrained atmosphere compared to his highly celebrated 2017 trip, as tensions over Iran and lingering trade disputes continue to complicate relations between Washington and Beijing. Ahead of the visit, Trump expressed confidence on social media that Chinese President Xi Jinping would warmly welcome him. However, analysts say China’s close economic relationship with Iran and ongoing disagreements over tariffs could dampen the mood during the visit. Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday night. His itinerary includes a formal welcome ceremony, bilateral talks with Xi, a visit to the historic Temple of Heaven, a state banquet and additional meetings focused on trade and economic cooperation. According to the White House, discussions are expected to cover plans for a new Board of Trade aimed at maintaining dialogue on economic matters, along with cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture and aerospace. China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing is ready to work with the United States on the basis of equality and mutual respect while managing differences and strengthening cooperation. Despite the ceremonial arrangements, observers believe the visit will not match the lavish reception Trump received during his first term, when China organised an elaborate “state visit-plus” featuring military parades, a tour of the Forbidden City and an official banquet. Experts say both sides now view the relationship differently. China has gained a clearer understanding of Trump’s approach, while Washington increasingly sees Beijing as a strategic rival. Analysts also expect limited breakthroughs on trade issues, noting that China may prefer to wait and assess the political landscape in the United States ahead of the midterm elections. Trump and Xi are expected to meet several times this year, including possible meetings at the White House, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China and the G20 summit in Florida. Although Trump has often spoken positively about Xi and their personal rapport, disagreements remain over Taiwan, tariffs and China’s role in the Iran conflict. The White House indicated that Trump will urge China to use its influence over Iran to help maintain regional stability. Beijing’s economic ties with Tehran, especially its imports of Iranian oil, have placed China in a significant diplomatic position amid the ongoing conflict. Trade remains another major challenge in bilateral relations. Several trade agreements announced during Trump’s first term failed to materialise fully, while tariff disputes and export restrictions have continued to fuel tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Still, both countries have recently shown interest in extending a temporary trade truce reached last year. The White House said Trump remains focused on securing tangible outcomes during the visit and is expected to pursue additional economic agreements with China.   

Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder has underscored the urgency of establishing a sustainable social security framework, describing the inclusion of all citizens in the pension system as vital for the creation of a welfare state. Dr Mozumder highlighted the transformative potential of the Universal Pension Scheme while speaking as the chief guest on Saturday at a workshop titled "Capacity and Potential of the National Pension Authority" held at the authority's conference room,. The Finance Secretary expressed optimism that the country could establish a robust social and financial security net by bringing citizens over the age of 18 under the four existing schemes: Prabash, Pragati, Surokkha, and Samata. He directed the National Pension Authority to intensify promotional activities, including seminars and workshops, to reach every segment of society. He also stressed the importance of developing an effective communication strategy and assured the authority of the Finance Division’s full support in these efforts. The workshop was organised to identify and resolve existing challenges in implementing the Universal Pension Scheme. Participants discussed the rationale, features, investment, and registration processes of the various schemes, alongside a two-month action plan and necessary amendments to existing rules. Attendees at the event emphasised the importance of involving low-income groups and suggested that government offices and missions abroad should be engaged in awareness campaigns to make the schemes more accessible and ‘people-friendly’. The workshop was presided over by Dr Md Suratuzzaman, Executive Chairman of the National Pension Authority. High-ranking officials, including Additional Secretary Dilruba Shahina, and Joint Secretaries Dr Md Ferdous Alam and Sharif Nazrul Islam, were also in attendance. Key insights were provided by National Pension Authority Member Sheikh Kamrul Hasan and General Manager Dr Md Ashrafuzzaman.

The Andon Café, operated by San Francisco-based startup Andon Labs, has placed an AI agent named “Mona” in charge of management tasks while human staff continue to prepare and serve drinks. Powered by Google’s Gemini, the system oversees hiring, contracts, inventory and day-to-day operations. International cyberattack disrupts universities and schools across three countries Since opening in mid-April, the café has earned over $5,700 in sales but remains below break-even, with less than $5,000 left from an initial budget exceeding $21,000. Organisers say most early spending went on setup costs and expect performance to stabilise over time. Customers have reacted with curiosity, with visitors able to call the AI via an in-café telephone. “It’s nice to see what happens if you push the boundary. The drink was good,” said customer Kajsa Norin. Andon Labs, founded in 2023, says it is stress-testing AI systems in real environments and has worked with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and xAI. It envisions AI-run organisations in the future. Technical staff member Hanna Petersson said the café is a controlled experiment to study ethical questions in AI-led management. Bangladesh's trade policy has long operated as a contradictory mix of export promotion and import protectionism, with its average tariff burden of 28 percent far exceeding the global average of 6 percent and even surpassing peer lower-middle income countries at 7.2 percent, a leading economist said Monday. Zaidi Sattar, Chairman of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI), made the observations while delivering the keynote address at a roundtable titled “Trade Policy, Industrial Protection, Investment Impacts, and Consumer Welfare,” organised by PRI's Center for Trade Policy and Protection Research (CTPPR) with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Restaurant owners demand tax cuts, gas connections ahead of budget The event was held at the PRI Conference Room in the capital. Sattar described Bangladesh's current trade policy as “a hotchpotch” of outward-looking and inward-looking approaches without clear direction, resulting in export success confined almost entirely to readymade garments, which account for 84 percent of total exports, while non-RMG export diversification has remained largely stagnant. He said the RMG sector effectively operates within a free trade enclave, while most other industries face a complex, multi-layered tariff regime comprising customs duties, regulatory duties, supplementary duties, VAT, advance income tax and other para-tariffs, pushing the nominal protection rate (NPR) to around 27.9 percent in FY26. Presenting historical data, Sattar noted that while average customs duties fell sharply from 70.6 percent in FY92 to around 13-14 percent in recent years, the gains were offset by the steady rise of para-tariffs, from 2.6 percent in FY92 to 13.2 percent in FY26, leaving effective protection largely unchanged over two decades. He described the persistent gap between output tariffs and input tariffs as a “crocodile tariff” structure, with output tariffs consistently running more than double the rate applied to inputs, entrenching protection for domestic producers at the expense of export competitiveness. Data showed that nearly 1,677 tariff lines, representing 99.8 percent of cases, carry supplementary duty rates on imports that exceed those applied domestically, a mechanism the PRI characterises as de facto industrial protection disguised within the revenue framework. Sattar argued that the primary barrier to export diversification is not a lack of competitiveness, but a policy-induced anti-export bias embedded in the tariff structure. PRI research covering 1,377 non-RMG product categories found that 39 percent are highly competitive globally, with an average anti-export bias (AEB) ratio of 1.303,  meaning the policy environment systematically favours domestic sales over exporting. “With all the subsidies and support applied to exports, these are no match to the high protection subsidy through tariffs to import-substitute production,” Sattar said. He added that the 30-40 percent depreciation of the taka between FY2022 and FY2025 further compounded the effective tariff burden, as exchange rate depreciation is economically equivalent to an increase in import duties. On foreign direct investment, Sattar said Bangladesh continues to attract only around 1 percent of GDP in FDI inflows, a fraction of the 4-6 percent of GDP achieved by Vietnam and Thailand, because export-oriented, efficiency-seeking investment gravitates toward open, predictable and trade-neutral regimes, conditions Bangladesh currently fails to meet. Turning to consumer welfare, Sattar said the protection regime effectively functions as a hidden tax on ordinary Bangladeshis. PRI research estimates that consumers pay 50 to 100 percent above world prices for most goods, whether imported or domestically produced, with the total protection cost to consumers estimated at 6.3 percent of GDP in FY20. He cited the IMF's purchasing power parity data to illustrate the price-level problem: while Bangladesh is projected to marginally overtake India in nominal per capita GDP in 2026, India's PPP-adjusted per capita income stands 15 percent higher at $11,789 against Bangladesh's $10,271, a gap the IMF projects will widen to 24 percent by 2031. Sattar invoked economist Mancur Olson's theory of collective action to explain why reform has proved difficult: producer associations lobby effectively for protection, while consumers large, diffuse and poorly organised, bear the costs in silence. “Restrictive trade and import regime restricts consumer choice, raises prices, and undermines consumer welfare,” Sattar said, calling on the government to strike a balance between protection incentives for producers and the mounting costs imposed on consumers.

Bangladesh Bank has directed all commercial banks to set up dedicated counterfeit currency detection booths at cattle markets across the country to ensure the security of large-scale cash transactions during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. The central bank issued a circular in this regard recently asking banks to deploy note-counting and currency authentication machines to prevent the circulation of fake notes during the peak sacrificial animal trading period. According to the directive, each commercial bank must appoint a focal coordinating officer for the operation and submit their names, designations and contact details to Bangladesh Bank by May 17. For cattle markets in Dhaka North and South City Corporations, specific banks have been assigned individual markets to operate booths until the night before Eid. Outside Dhaka, Bangladesh Bank’s regional offices will coordinate the arrangement, while Sonali Bank will lead coordination in districts where the central bank has no branch presence. The circular also instructed that the booths must provide uninterrupted service throughout the trading period up to Eid night. Banks have been asked to maintain close coordination with local administrations, city corporations, municipalities and law enforcement agencies to ensure smooth operations and security. In Dhaka North, banks including Islami Bank, Shimanto Bank, AB Bank, National Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Eastern Bank, IFIC Bank, Meghna Bank, United Commercial Bank, City Bank, Agrani Bank, BRAC Bank, Dutch-Bangla Bank, Bank Asia, Jamuna Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank and BASIC Bank have been assigned responsibilities. In Dhaka South, 19 banksincluding Premier Bank, Uttara Bank, Dutch-Bangla Bank, Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Dhaka Bank, Rupali Bank, Janata Bank, One Bank, Modhumoti Bank, Community Bank, Pubali Bank, Mercantile Bank, NCC Bank and Sonali Bank—have been deployed to operate detection booths across 13 designated cattle markets. Central bank officials said the initiative is aimed at safeguarding financial transactions during the festive season and ensuring confidence among buyers and sellers in a cash-intensive market.  

The government is undertaking a series of measures to ensure transparency, accountability and effective oversight in the country's essential commodities market, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said Monday. The government has initiated strategic reserve building, AI-powered supply chain monitoring and enhanced TCB capacity to prevent any form of syndication or market manipulation in the daily commodities sector, said the minister at the inauguration of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh's (TCB) truck sale programme ahead of Eid-ul-Azha at Agargaon in the captial. No scope to hike essentials’ prices citing fuel costs: Commerce Minister “No syndicate or market manipulation will be allowed to take hold in the essential commodities market. Strategic reserves, artificial intelligence-based supply chain surveillance and a stronger TCB are our instruments to ensure that,” the minister said. He said the government's primary goal is to ensure subsidised essential food items reach low-income, lower-middle-income and marginalised communities across the country. TCB regularly sells goods at subsidised rates nationwide, with special truck sale drives during major festivals. Muktadir said approximately 2.28 crore beneficiaries received subsidised food during the last Ramadan, a figure now being expanded to about 2.88 crore. Similarly, food supply through TCB during last year's Eid-ul-Azha stood at around 10,900 tonnes, which has been raised to approximately 14,000 tonnes this year, an increase of nearly 40 percent. “Whenever there is an unusual market situation, a festival or abnormal price pressure, the government will activate TCB truck sales as needed. We are always prepared to ensure food security for people,” he said. On beneficiary verification, the minister disclosed that around 59 lakh of the one crore beneficiaries on the previous list were found to be questionable. Following thorough verification, 80 lakh genuine beneficiaries have been selected through a transparent process, with a further 20 lakh families to be included in phases. He added that new policies are being formulated to ensure transparency in TCB dealer appointments. “TCB is being transformed into a fully unquestionable, accountable and technology-driven institution.” He also expressed the government's intent to build a broader, partnership-based market ecosystem that allows more entrepreneurs to participate in the essential commodities sector and fosters healthy competition. “This government is firmly committed to establishing effective market oversight and control in the interest of the people. Our goal is a market that is transparent, stable and free from manipulation.” Commerce Secretary (Current Charge) Md Abdur Rahim Khan spoke as a special guest, while TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad delivered the welcome address. The minister formally opened the truck sale drive by selling TCB products to buyers at fair prices.

The High Court on Monday granted bail to journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa in 11 cases out of 13 including a murder case related to the July Uprising in 2024. The HC bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order. Of the 11 cases, Farzana Rupa was granted bail in six cases while Shakil Ahmed secured bail in five. The court issued a rule in one remaining case against each of them, meaning they will not be released immediately as bail has not been granted in all cases, said their lawyer. Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua appeared for the petitioners while Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque represented the state. Shakil Ahmed had served as head of news at Ekattor Television  while Farzana Rupa was its chief reporter. They were removed from their posts on August 8, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government. The couple was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 21, 2024, while attempting to travel to Paris on a Turkish Airlines flight.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions over the next 72 hours commencing 10 am on Monday. According to the special bulletin of BMD, “The formation of thunderclouds is likely and it may continue over the country. Under its influence heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions during next 72 hours.” Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall temporary waterlogging may occurr at places over Sylhet division.  

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday directed police officers to treat criminals as criminals regardless of their political identity, stressing that no compromise would be made with corruption, terrorism and misrule. “While dealing with corruption and terrorism many times you face pressures related to political identity or political affiliation. I want to give you a clear message that you should not consider anyone’s political identity. Whoever is involved in crime must be treated as a criminal,” he said. The Prime Minister made the remarks while addressing senior police officers at his Tejgaon office on the occasion of Police Week 2026. Stating that the application of law is equal for everyone, he said police are the protectors of law, not any political party, and urged officers to carry out their duties for the welfare of the state and the people. “No individual or political party is your party. He said the role of police is indispensable in building a strong, accountable, lawful and people-friendly state system. “As I said yesterday, and have said before, the government does not want to compromise with corruption, terrorism and misrule.” Tarique said the relationship between police and people must be both legal and humane, urging the officials to gain the public trust. “Alongside your other responsibilities, a significant amount of your time is also spent dealing with political instability. This is part of your duty, and it happens, more or less, in every country around the world,” he said. The Prime Minister said his government wants to ensure the democratic and political rights of people. “But, we must also remember that no one should be allowed to engage in activities that could harm communal harmony or involve any form of sabotage.” He acknowledged that maintaining law and order has become more difficult because of changing patterns of crime driven by technological advancement and transnational organised crimes. “As crime patterns evolve, the scope of police activities has also become broader and more extensive. Today’s policing is no longer limited to a city or district. Police officers now need broader and more specialised skills to deal with various forms of global and technology-based crimes,” Tarique said. He also warned officers against seeking postings based on personal preference or promotion ambitions, saying professionalism must come first. “If we focus only on promotions or desired postings, it compromises professionalism,” the Prime Minister said, asking officers to work sincerely wherever they are posted. Tarique also said neither governments nor administrative positions are permanent. The Prime Minister said there is no alternative to an efficient, brave, honest and neutral police force for the success of any government in the world. “When people face danger, they first go to the police station. From the police response, they judge the government itself…So, Police is the mirror of the government” he said. Referring to the situation after August 5, the Prime Minister praised police for handling several difficult situations strategically and helping control mob violence in many instances over the last one and a half years. Tarique said the government wants to transform the police into a truly people-friendly force where ordinary citizens can place their trust and confidence. He also stressed the importance of protecting communal harmony in the country, saying officers must ensure it firmly and responsibly. “You may have a very good colleague who belongs to another religion. As fellow human beings and colleagues, we must protect harmony and respect for all communities,” the Prime Minister said. “We want to build a prosperous, self-reliant, democratic, safe and humane Bangladesh. Beyond your uniforms, I believe you will agree with me as citizens as well. We want to turn this aspiration into reality, and Insha’Allah it is possible to achieve,” he said But to fulfil this aspiration successfully, Tarique said maintaining law and order in the country and ensuring peace and security for the people is imperative. “So, my special appeal to you is that wherever responsibilities are entrusted to you within the police administration, you must carry them out with sincerity and importance. Only then will we be able to ensure an efficient, dynamic and professional police force,” he said. The Prime Minister said people become involved in crime for many reasons in society and the economic inequality is one of the major causes. After assuming office, he said the current government has taken various initiatives to reduce economic disparity among different sections and professions and to ensure a socio-economic safety net for citizens. Tarique said the government will continue to work for the welfare of the police force as well. “Honesty, merit and efficiency will be the key principles in recruitment, transfers and postings within the administration. We know that police duties are never confined to fixed working hours.” Reiterating that how people view or evaluate the government largely depends on the behaviour and activities of police, he said the state expects honesty, efficiency, service, fairness, professionalism and humanity from them. “If you can uphold these qualities as much as possible, then your slogan, ‘My Police, My Country — Bangladesh First’, will truly become meaningful and successful. Let us move forward from our respective positions by doing whatever we can for the country, the nation and the people of this land,” the Prime Minister said. Four members of a family including a father and his three sons were burnt allegedly after a refrigerator compressor exploded at a house in Kutubpur Lakibazar area of Fatullah in Narayanganj on Monday morning.   The injured were identified as Abdul Kader ,50, and his three sons Mohammad Mehedi ,17, Sakib ,16, and Rakib,16. Abdul Kader’s neighbour Md Faruk said Kader works as an auto-rickshaw driver and lives in the area with his family. Resident surgeon of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Assistant Professor Dr Shaon Bin Rahman said Abdul Kader suffered 57% burns, while his sons Mehedi sustained 18%, Sakib 17% , and Rakib 25%  burns. Abdul Kader’s condition is critical, the doctor added.

A drug-addicted youth allegedly stabbed his mother to death after she refused to give him money for drugs at Dilpur village in Daganbhuiyan Upazila of Feni district on Sunday night. The accused, Mosharraf Hossain Rafi, 21,  also attacked his father and sister, leaving them injured. The deceased was identified as Lucky Begum, 45 and the injured are her husband Mohammad Mostafa, 55, and their daughter Mosammad Mithila Mostafa, 18, residents of Dilpur village. Truck's helper killed as stationary vehicle hit by another truck in Feni Witnesses and police said Rafi returned home on Sunday night and demanded money from his mother to buy drugs. When she refused, he attacked her with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured. As his sister Mithila and father Mostafa tried to save her, Rafi stabbed them as well. The injured were taken to Feni 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared Lucky Begum dead. Mostafa, a Saudi expatriate, and Mithila, a second-year HSC student of Rajapur Alim Madrasa, are undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Local caught Rafi and handed him over to law enforcers. Shahriar Kabir, a doctor at the emergency department of Feni 250-bed General Hospital, said Lucky Begum had died before being brought to the hospital. Muhammad Faizul Azim Noman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daganbhuiyan Police Station, said Rafi was detained from the scene. During initial interrogation, he told police that he had ordered two knives online. Police seized the knives used in the killing. Additional Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam said the body was sent to the Feni General Hospital morgue for autopsy and legal proceedings are underway.

Another child has died at the isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) with measles symptoms, officials said on Sunday. With the latest death, the total number of fatalities in the hospital’s measles isolation ward has risen to 28, said Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Golam Maula, focal person of the ward. He said a seven-month-old girl from Muktagachha in Mymensingh was admitted on May 8 with measles symptoms and was receiving treatment. However, she died in the early hours of Monday due to post-measles pneumonia and respiratory failure. Dr. Golam Maula said 24 more children were admitted in the last 24 hours, while a total of 89 children are currently undergoing treatment there. He said a total of 1,244 children have been admitted with measles symptoms since March 17. Of them, 1,027 have been discharged and 28 have died. He added that 35 more children recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours. The minimum age of patients admitted ranges from three months to 10 years, with most cases involving children aged between three months and one year. Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Assistant Director (Administration) Dr. Mohammad Mainuddin Khan said three medical teams have been formed to manage treatment in the measles isolation ward, and all patients are receiving proper care. He also said a children’s ICU has not yet been launched due to shortages of manpower and equipment, but Bubble CPAP (bCPAP) support is currently being used. During a visit to the area, UNB observed that many patients were receiving treatment on the floor and hospital balconies due to a shortage of beds. Meanwhile, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 11 more children died from measles and measles-like symptoms across the country in the 24 hours till 8:00 am Sunday, bringing the total deaths to 409 since March.  

A Turkish Airlines passenger jet caught fire while landing at Nepal’s main airport on Monday, forcing the closure of the airport, though all passengers were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. The flight, arriving from Istanbul, landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu when fire and smoke were seen coming from the right landing gear, according to airport officials. Frontier plane hits pedestrian during takeoff at Denver airport Emergency response teams quickly intervened and brought the fire under control, after which all passengers were safely evacuated from the Airbus A330 aircraft. A total of 277 passengers were on board. Following the incident, Kathmandu airport was shut down on Monday morning, and several incoming flights were placed on hold while authorities investigated the situation and worked to clear the only available runway. Nepal has a history of frequent aviation accidents due to its challenging mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions, which often make flying difficult. In a similar incident in 2015, another Turkish Airlines aircraft landing in dense fog in Kathmandu skidded off a slippery runway, leading to the airport’s closure for several days. No injuries were reported in that case, and the aircraft was later removed and converted into a museum.

Two people were killed in a collision between a covered van and a motorcycle at Gilapol on Navaron-Satkhira highway in Jashore on Monday morning. The victims were identified as Shahin Hossain, 34, son of  Siddique Hossain of Ulashi Khalpar area, and Tozammel Hossain, 45, son of late Atiar Rahman of the same area. Eyewitnesses said Shahinur and Tozammel were heading towards neighbouring Navaron Bazar on a motorcycle. Three ‘cow lifters’ beaten to death in Gazipur When they reached in front of Kabir Bricks in Gilapol area around 8am, a covered van coming from the opposite direction crashed into the motorbike, leaving Shahinur dead on the spot. Critically injured Tozammel was rescued by locals and taken to a hospital, where he died on the way. Gopal Karmaker, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Navaron Highway Police Station, said police seized the covered van. Legal proceedings are underway and drives have been conducted to arrest the driver and helper of the covered van, he added.

The recent suicide of a 35-year-old trader in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram has spotlighted a worsening drug crisis in the bordering upazila where easy access to narcotics is drawing youths into addiction and related crimes. Chandan Kumar Ravidash of Kurushafarusha village took his own life on May 8 after a prolonged struggle with substance abuse. A goldsmith by profession, he had built a small jewellery business in Balarhat Bazar and was supporting a family with three young children. His family said addiction steadily eroded his life draining his income, straining relationships and leaving him increasingly unstable despite repeated attempts at rehabilitation. “Drugs destroyed my son. We tried everything to save him, but couldn’t,” said his father, Dinesh Kumar Ravidash. “Now his children are left without a father. No parent should have to endure this.” Kishore Kumar Bhattacharya, a fellow trader, said Chandan was once known as a polite and cheerful man. “We still cannot accept his death. Addiction slowly ruined him,” he said. A wider, hidden crisis Chandan’s death reflects a broader pattern. On the same day, a widow in Naodanga area also died by suicide, reportedly driven by despair over her only son’s addiction. Local sources say many youths from across the upazila are currently receiving treatment in rehabilitation centers. For poor, agriculture-dependent families, the cost—often around Tk 40,000 per month—is a heavy burden, forcing some to sell land or assets. A resident from Gorokmondol, who requested anonymity, said, “My younger brother is addicted. We are trying to save him, but the cost of treatment is extremely difficult for us.” Abdul Majid Manik, a resident of Naodanga union, said he had to send his son to rehabilitation twice and even hand him over to police at one point. “Without collective social resistance, it is impossible to control this problem,” he said. A sharp rise in drug abuse in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram is sparking growing concern, as addiction spreads rapidly among young people and begins to take a heavy toll on families and the wider community. Residents say narcotics have become increasingly accessible in border are, drawing in youths, including school and college students. The fallout is evident in a parallel rise in crimes such as theft and mugging, leaving parents, teachers, and community leaders deeply concerned. Despite ongoing anti-drug drives by law enforcement agencies, locals said there has been little visible improvement. Many are now calling for tougher, more coordinated action to stem the crisis. Authorities warn of growing threat Local public representatives and educationists said  the situation is becoming increasingly alarming. Abdul Hanif Sarker, principal of Naodanga School and College, said drug use among students is rising. “We are running awareness campaigns, but without stronger social resistance, it is difficult to eliminate this,” he said, adding that addiction is also pushing many youths into criminal activities. Naodanga Union Parishad Chairman Md Hasen Ali blamed lack of family awareness. “When a child suddenly brings expensive items home, families often do not question the source. This negligence is dangerous,” he said. Police say anti-drug operations are ongoing, while the upazila administration has proposed setting up a permanent checkpoint in Balarhat to curb drug trafficking. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dilara Akter said administrative efforts alone are not enough. “Families must be more vigilant about their children where they go and who they associate with,” she said. Local people fear that without immediate and effective action, the future generation of Phulbari could face a devastating crisis. National backdrop adds urgency The situation in Phulbari reflects a broader national concern A total of 82 lakh people, almost 5% of the population in Bangladesh, use illegal drugs for recreational purposes, according to the findings of a nationwide survey. Professor Md Shahinul Alam, vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), disclosed the survey at a dissemination meeting titled “Estimation of the Number and Category of Persons Abusing Drugs and Associated Factors: The study was conducted under the supervision of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) and Bangladesh Medical University and Research and Management Consultants Limited (RMCL) jointly conducted the survey between February and June 2025. The study identified cannabis as the most commonly used drug, with nearly 61 lakh users nationwide. This was followed by methamphetamine or Yaba (about 23 lakh), alcohol (around 20 lakh), codeine-based cough syrup, sleeping pills and heroin. Around 39,000 people were found to inject drugs, placing them at high risk of HIV, hepatitis and other infectious diseases. Researchers found that drug users spend an average of Tk 6,000 per month on drugs. The study also revealed that drug abuse largely begins at a young age, with about 33 percent of users first taking drugs between the ages of 8-17, while 59 percent started between 18- 25.      

US President Donald Trump has said that the United States is closely monitoring Iranian enriched uranium reportedly buried under rubble, adding that the US Space Force is handling the issue. Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan has said the country’s hilly region has immense potential for tourism and the government is taking special initiatives to attract not only domestic but also foreign tourists to the region. “Necessary measures are also being taken to ensure the safety of foreign visitors and allow them to travel freely,” he said while addressing a views-exchange meeting on the development of the tourism sector in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, organised by the Resort Owners Association in Rangamati on Sunday night. Dipen Dewan said an increase in foreign tourist arrivals in the Chittagong Hill Tracts would not only help earn foreign currency for the country but also reduce unemployment at the local level and improve the financial condition of residents. Mentioning some administrative barriers to foreign tourists’ travel in the region, he said discussions are underway at the highest levels of the government to address the issues. Referring to concerns over tourist safety in the hills, the minister said fear and negative propaganda often discourage foreign tourists from travelling there. “We must work together to stop this culture of intimidation. Only then will people be able to freely enjoy the natural beauty of the hills,” he said. He urged the media to help remove negative perceptions through positive reporting. Speaking about Kaptai Lake, he said the vast waterbody is a valuable national asset and that the government plans to achieve economic prosperity in the tourism sector centring the lake. The densely populated capital of Bangladesh has once again topped the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Dhaka was recorded at 174 at 10:20 am on Monday India’s Delhi, Uzbekistan's Tashkent and Vietnam's Hanoi ranked second, third and fourth respectively, with AQI scores of 153, 147 and 145. An AQI reading between 101 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’, particularly for sensitive groups. A reading between 201 and 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’, while 301 to 400 is classified as ‘hazardous’, posing serious health risks. The AQI is used by government agencies to report daily air quality and inform the public about pollution levels and possible health impacts. In Bangladesh, the index is calculated based on five major pollutants — particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and ozone. Dhaka has long struggled with severe air pollution, with conditions typically worsening in winter and improving during the monsoon season. Air pollution remains one of the leading global health risks. Exposure to polluted air increases the risk of heart disease, chronic respiratory illness, lung infections and cancer, according to multiple studies. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that air pollution causes around seven million premature deaths worldwide each year, mainly due to stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and acute respiratory infections.

China on Monday morning successfully launched the cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-10 from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site to deliver supplies to its orbiting Tiangong space station, according to the China Manned Space Agency. The Long March-7 carrier rocket, carrying Tianzhou-10, lifted off at 8:14 a.m. (Beijing Time) from Wenchang in south China’s Hainan Province, the agency said. Around 10 minutes after liftoff, the Tianzhou-10 separated from the rocket and entered its planned orbit, after which its solar panels were deployed. Oil prices climbed after US President Donald Trump dismissed Iran’s reply to Washington’s peace proposal as “totally unacceptable,” raising concerns over prolonged tensions. Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose 2.69 percent to $104.01 per barrel by 23:36 GMT on Sunday, building on a 1.23 percent gain recorded on Friday. Washington’s latest proposal addressed a deal to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and roll back Iran’s nuclear program, an issue that Tehran would rather discuss later. The White House had no immediate comment about Iran’s reply but U.S. President Donald Trump on social media accused Tehran of “playing games” with the United States for nearly 50 years, adding: “They will be laughing no longer!” Trump is giving diplomacy “every chance we possibly can before going back to hostilities,” the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, told ABC earlier Sunday. Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen or heard publicly since the war began, “issued new and decisive directives for the continuation of operations and the powerful confrontation with the enemies” while meeting with the head of the joint military command, the state broadcaster reported, with no details. Drone attacks target Gulf Arab nations The fragile ceasefire was tested when a drone ignited a small fire on a ship off Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait reported drones entering their airspace. The UAE’s Defense Ministry said it shot down two drones and blamed Iran. No casualties were reported, and no one immediately claimed responsibility. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry called it a “dangerous and unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and safety of maritime trade routes and vital supplies in the region.” The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center said the ship attack happened 23 nautical miles (43 kilometers) northeast of Doha. It gave no details about the ship’s owner or origin. Kuwait Defense Ministry spokesperson Brig. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi said forces responded to drones “in accordance with established procedures” but did not say where they came from. Iran and armed allied groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon have used drones to carry out hundreds of strikes since the war began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Feb. 28. Iran says it’s on ‘full readiness’ to protect nuclear sites Trump has reiterated threats to resume full-scale bombing if Iran does not accept an agreement to reopen the strait and roll back its nuclear program. Iran has largely blocked the strategic waterway that’s key to the global flow of oil, natural gas and fertilizer since the war began, rattling world markets. The U.S. in turn has blockaded Iranian ports and on Friday struck two Iranian oil tankers it said were trying to breach the blockade. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an excerpt of an interview with CBS scheduled to air later Sunday said the war isn’t over because the enriched uranium needs to be taken out of Iran. “Trump has said to me, ‘I want to go in there,’ and I think it can be done physically,” he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Moscow’s proposal to take enriched uranium from Iran to help negotiate a settlement remains on the table. The majority of Iran’s highly enriched uranium is likely at its Isfahan nuclear complex, the International Atomic Energy Agency director-general told The Associated Press last month. The facility was bombarded by U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in the 12-day war last year and faced less intense attacks this year. Iran warns against French-British effort in the strait Iran’s deputy foreign minister warned against a planned French-British effort that aims to support maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz after hostilities are over. “The presence of French and British vessels, or those of any other country, for any possible cooperation with illegal U.S. actions in the Strait of Hormuz that violate international law will be met with a decisive and immediate response from the armed forces,” Kazem Gharibabadi said on social media. French President Emmanuel Macron responded by saying it won’t be a military deployment but an international mission to secure shipping once conditions allow. Several attacks against ships in the Persian Gulf have occurred over the past week, and a U.S. effort to “guide” ships through the strait was quickly paused. South Korea announced initial findings from an investigation that said two unidentified airborne objects struck the South Korean-operated vessel HMM NAMU about one minute apart while it was anchored in the strait last week, causing an explosion and fire. The Rajshahi district administration on Sunday announced May 15 as the official start date for mango harvesting in the current season. The “Mango Calendar” was unveiled at a meeting held in the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam. Mango growers, traders and officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension attended the meeting. According to the calendar, harvesting of Guti mangoes will begin on May 15, followed by Gopalbhog on May 22. Other varieties will be harvested according to the following schedule: Ranipachanda or Laxmanbhog from May 25, Himsagar or Khirsapat from May 30, Langra or Banana Mango from June 10, Amrapali and Fazli from June 15, BARI Mango-4 from July 5, Ashwina from July 10 and Gourmoti from July 15. Katimon and BARI Mango-11 varieties, however, can be harvested throughout the year depending on ripeness. The meeting warned that strict action would be taken against farmers or traders found harvesting unripe mangoes before the scheduled dates. However, if mangoes ripen earlier due to weather conditions, growers may market them after obtaining certification from the local upazila agriculture officer. Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam said the calendar was prepared based on consultations with farmers, traders and agricultural officials to ensure consumers receive ripe and safe mangoes. Deputy Director of the Rajshahi Agricultural Extension Department Md Mozdar Hossain said mango orchards currently cover around 18,000 hectares of land in Rajshahi. He said average production stands at about 12 metric tonnes per hectare, with last season’s total output reaching around 216,000 metric tonnes. This year, the production target has been set at approximately 230,000 metric tonnes.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in West Asia/Middle East, and hoped for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. She made the remarks when Dr Wisam Hussein Ali Al Ithawi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Iraq in Dhaka, paid a courtesy call on her at the Foreign Ministry. The state minister appreciated the Government of Iraq for hosting Bangladeshi nationals and ensuring their welfare and safety. She also conveyed appreciation to the Iraqi leadership and government for congratulating the BNP-led government following its victory in the 13th parliamentary election. Shama Obaed recalled with gratitude Iraq’s recognition of Bangladesh in 1972 as the first Arab country to do so.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit University of Dhaka on May 12 to attend a workshop on higher education at the university’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban. The programme, titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Bangladesh,” by UGC will begin at 10am, where the prime minister will attend as the chief guest. The information was confirmed by DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam. This will be the prime minister’s first visit to Dhaka University since assuming office following the latest national election. It was also known, the inaugural session of the workshop will also be attended by Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and the Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Mahdi Amin. The event will be chaired by UGC Chairman Prof Mamun Ahmed.

A three-day national workshop at Holiday Inn, Dhaka, under the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative (CSESI) wss held to assess existing capacities and strengthen climate risk analysis for the education sector. To support evidence-based policy planning and build institutional readiness, the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MoPME), with UNESCO, the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO-IIEP), Save the Children, and support from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), launched the workshop. Running from 10 to 12 May 2026, the workshop brings together over 30 officials, technical experts and education planners from national and sub-national levels. Inaugurating the workshop, the Chief Guest, Mr. Abdul Khaleque, Secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Education, said, “This workshop is particularly significant because it focuses on examining the capacities we already have within our system and identifying where further strengthening is needed Speaking at the event as the Guest of Honour, Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, said, “This workshop moves beyond identifying risks and focuses on understanding the existing capacities, systems, and institutional mechanisms required to address those risks effectively. UNESCO-IIEP specialist Ms. Yi Shi is leading the technical facilitation alongside the UNESCO Dhaka Office and Save the Children International. Bangladesh remains one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in South Asia. According to the 2025 Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index, Bangladesh ranks 178th out of 187 countries, while national education data show that nearly 16,000 educational institutions were affected by climate-related disasters in 2023. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, floods, cyclones, and salinity intrusion continue to affect school attendance, infrastructure, and children’s learning outcomes. UNESCO-IIEP’s climate risk analysis also shows that while Bangladesh has strong policy foundations on climate resilience, climate adaptation is not yet systematically integrated across education planning, teacher development, risk assessments, and infrastructure planning. The workshop is part of a broader national process under the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative, which began in Bangladesh in 2024 with a joint scoping mission and country work planning process. In October 2025, Bangladesh held its first national workshop to identify and analyse climate hazards, vulnerabilities and risks facing the education sector. 

Eleven more children died from measles and with measles-like symptoms across the country in 24 hours until 8:00 am Sunday, bringing the total number to 409 since March, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Among the new deaths, four were confirmed as measles-related while the remaining 7 were listed as suspected cases. The 'suspected' cases lack a lab-tested confirmation. Measles patients, due to their distinct symptoms, are not always tested in the lab, of which there is a severe shortage anyway. Of the confirmed deaths, the highest three cases were reported in Dhaka. DGHS in its latest update also added 46 more previously unreported suspected deaths from different divisions outside Dhaka. With the latest figures, the total number of confirmed measles deaths since March 15 has risen to 65 while suspected deaths to 344. The National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) and the National Verification Committee (NVC) have said in a statement that this reporting method is giving rise to confusion among the public, and added that the 'suspected' cases must be counted as deaths from measles. According to DGHS data, 1,503 new suspected measles cases were recorded during the reporting period, taking the total number of suspected cases to 49,159. During the same period, 205 new confirmed measles cases were reported, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 6,819. Since March 15, a total of 34,909 suspected measles patients have been hospitalised, 30,862 of them have recovered, the DGHS said.

In a significant shift in global trade dynamics, Bangladesh has overtaken China to become the second-largest apparel exporter to the United States in the first quarter of 2026. The shift comes as steep "counter-tariffs" imposed by the Trump administration have gutted China’s market share, even as global demand remains sluggish. According to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), US apparel imports from the world fell by 11.63 percent to $17.73 billion during the January-March 2026 period. While nearly all major manufacturing hubs recorded negative growth, the scale of China’s collapse has allowed Bangladesh to climb the rankings despite its own moderate decline in earnings. The Tariff Impact: China vs. Bangladesh The reshuffling of the leaderboard is largely attributed to a series of aggressive trade policies. While Bangladesh’s exports to the US fell by 8.38 percent to $2.04 billion in the first quarter, China’s exports plummeted by a staggering 52.91 percent, falling to just $1.69 billion. Industry analysts note that this is a direct consequence of the reciprocal tariffs initiated in April 2025. While China faces massive hurdles, Bangladesh secured a strategic trade agreement on February 9, 2026, which reduced its specific counter-tariff rate to 19 percent. However, the legal landscape remains volatile. Following a February Supreme Court ruling that declared certain emergency tariffs illegal, the US administration applied a new 10 percent duty under the 1974 Trade Act. Just this past week, the US Court of International Trade issued a stay on these duties for specific importers, adding a layer of uncertainty for global buyers. Vietnam Maintains Dominance Despite the shifts between Bangladesh and China, Vietnam continues to hold the top spot. It was the only country among the top five suppliers to post positive growth, with its exports rising 2.77 percent to $3.98 billion. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to immediately inspect and take steps to open six unused hospital buildings in six districts. The directive came following a report published in The Daily Prothom Alo on April 12, 2026, titled “Six Shishu hospital buildings lying unused despite Tk 320 crore investment.” The report said that although modern hospital buildings have been constructed in Rangpur, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barishal, Sylhet and Cumilla, they have remained unused for years. The hospitals are Rajshahi Shishu Hospital, Khulna Divisional Shishu Hospital, Rangpur Shishu Hospital, Barishal Shishu Hospital, Cumilla Shishu Hospital and Sylhet District Hospital. Following the report, the Prime Minister held an emergency meeting with Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain, State Minister Dr MA Muhith, Health Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury and other senior officials. In the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed the authorities to immediately inspect the facilities and take necessary steps to make them operational. He also asked for a progress report on the implementation of the directives by June 2, 2026. He further directed that Kushtia Medical College Hospital, which is partially operational, be fully activated as a 500-bed facility. Instructions were also given to expedite the launch of other healthcare projects, including the Super Specialised Hospital under Bangladesh Medical University in Shahbagh, Dhaka. Besides, the Prime Minister directed the fast-track implementation of the 1,000-bed Bangladesh–China Friendship Hospital in Nilphamari through coordination with the Chinese Embassy via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Health Secretary said expanding advanced medical services in the northern region—home to about 2 crore people—would help address challenges linked to poverty, limited healthcare infrastructure and shortage of skilled manpower. He said the proposed hospital could serve as a regional referral centre and strengthen specialised healthcare services in the area.

The government is ensuring all necessary preparations and management measures to make waterway travel safe, comfortable and hassle-free for homebound people during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Shaikh Rabiul Alam said on Sunday. "Waterways are an inseparable part of life and livelihoods in riverine Bangladesh. Yet water accidents remain a major challenge. To address this, the government, vessel owners, operators and passengers must all play a responsible role together," the minister made the remarks at the inaugural ceremony of "Maritime Safety Week 2026," organised by the Department of Shipping at Dhaka Ladies Club on Eskaton Garden Road. The week-long programme, running under the theme "Safe Voyage, Protection of Lives and Property," aims to strengthen waterway safety, prevent accidents and raise public awareness. Minister Rabiul said the government has already begun ensuring vessel fitness certification, training for operators, and deploying modern technology for waterway navigation marking, while surveillance and law enforcement on waterways are being further intensified. "We want every voyage to be safe and every family to reach their destination without harm." Emphasising the government's firm commitment to making the country's waterways fully safe and passenger-friendly, the minister stressed the importance of adhering to operational regulations, stopping the practice of carrying excess passengers, and ensuring all necessary safety equipment on board every vessel. He added that technology-driven monitoring, registration drives, and public awareness initiatives would continue in the future. State Minister for the Shipping Ministry and Bridge Division Md Razib Ahsan, speaking as special guest, said waterway accidents can be brought down to zero through awareness and accountability. He issued strict directives to the relevant authorities and river police to stop the movement of unapproved and unfit vessels ahead of the Eid journey. Shipping Secretary Zakaria revealed that a nationwide vessel census has identified a large number of unregistered boats and vessels, and a drive is underway to bring them swiftly under the registration framework. Director General of the Department of Shipping Commodore Md Shafiul Bari said a modern, technology-driven maritime safety system is being built through the introduction of digital number plates, online services, mandatory life jacket use, and the LTMS (Licence and Traffic Management Software). He expressed optimism that the measures would ensure discipline, transparency and accountability across the shipping sector.

A court in Brahmanbaria on Sunday sentenced two individuals identifying themselves as journalists to five years’ imprisonment in an extortion case. The convicts are SM Ali Azam and Ashiqur Rahman Roni. Judge Masud Parvez of the Brahmanbaria Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 delivered the verdict in the afternoon. The accused were present in the courtroom during the announcement and were later sent to jail. According to the case statement, SM Ali Azam and Ashiqur Rahman Roni visited Sharifpur East Government Primary School in Ashuganj upazila on September 14, 2021, introducing themselves as journalists. They reportedly sought access to various bills, vouchers and official documents of the school. When the headmaster informed them that relevant authorities handle such records, they allegedly became angry and threatened to publish false reports against the teachers unless Tk 20,000 was paid as extortion. They also misbehaved with staff members. At one stage, local residents and teachers detained SM Ali Azam, while Roni fled the scene on a motorcycle. Later, the detained suspect was handed over to police on instructions from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). Following the incident, headmaster Md Habibur Rahman filed a case with Ashuganj Police Station under sections 419, 385 and 506 of the Penal Code. Police later submitted a charge sheet after investigation. After hearing witnesses and arguments, the court handed down the verdict. Plaintiff’s lawyer Syed Tafsir Ahmed Tanvir said the convicts had been involved in extortion at different institutions using the identity of journalists, and the verdict was delivered based on evidence. Ashuganj Press Club President Selim Parvez said journalism is a responsible profession and those convicted were not mainstream journalists, adding that they misused press identity cards and social media pages to deceive people.  

Dhaka University Medical Centre is facing a shortage of physiotherapy services amid a growing number of patients, law professor and former adviser to the interim government Dr Asif Nazrul has said. In a post on his verified Facebook account on Sunday, he said he had been receiving physiotherapy at the medical centre due to muscle pain above his knees caused by prolonged sitting or sleeping. He noted that his condition had improved after three consecutive days of treatment, but the pain returned as the medical centre remained closed on Friday and Saturday. “I rushed to the medical centre after class today and found no one available to provide physiotherapy. Many others were also waiting,” he wrote. “It was learned that a new official has been appointed to a very high position at DU. They went to give him flowers greetings.” “The veranda of the Medical Centre is filled with patients and their relatives. There is no fragrance of flowers, only the smell of sweat and suffering,” he added.

In the wake of several recent violent incidents in different districts, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday urged the government to ensure public safety before undertaking development initiatives. "No programme undertaken by the government, ignoring the security of the people, is likely to be successful. The security of the people must be ensured first and then steps must be taken for transparent development," he said in a facebook post. Referring to recent incidents, Shafiqur Rahman said four people were recently killed in Naogaon, three in Chattogram and five in Gazipur. He cited that three people suspected of cattle theft were beaten to death in Bagchala village under Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur early Sunday. Questioning the causes behind the incidents, the Jamaat chief asked whether these were merely signs of social disorder or outcome of public anger stemming from the lack of proper enforcement of laws. “No extrajudicial killing can be supported in any way,” he said. Shafiqur Rahman said establishing the rule of law in the country would remain impossible unless the Home Ministry, the Law Ministry and the judiciary become acceptable to the people. “At the root of everything is the government's goodwill. Only goodwill and appropriate initiatives can bring effective solutions to this social problem,” said the Jamaat chief.

Speakers at a programme on Sunday said strict enforcement of traffic laws is essential to prevent road crashes and improve road safety. They made the remarks at an event titled “Youth Talk for Comprehensive Road Safety Law,” organised by the Health Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission at its head office in the capital. Speaking as chief guest, Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Zamir, Member of Parliament for Panchagarh-1, said compliance with traffic rules and greater awareness among young people could play a significant role in reducing road crashes. He mentioned that the death rate among youths is alarmingly high due to reckless motorcycle speeding, lack of helmet use and violations of traffic regulations. He stressed the need for young people to engage more actively in proper training, obtaining valid driving licences and participating in initiatives for safer roads. Additional Deputy Inspector General (Operations) of Highway Police Muntasirul Islam said stronger measures are needed to prevent road crashes. He emphasised the importance of identifying the actual scale of road fatalities and taking effective steps accordingly. He also underscored the need for a comprehensive road safety law. The session was chaired by Dr S M Khalilur Rahman, Vice President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, while Iqbal Masud, Director of the Health and WASH Sector of the organisation, also spoke at the event. Speakers urged lawmakers to expedite the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive road safety law. They also highlighted the importance of aligning with the United Nations Safe System Approach, improving road safety education for all users, and involving young people in both policymaking and implementation to strengthen road safety governance.

Appreciating the Omani government for hosting a large Bangladeshi community in the Sultanate, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday reiterated Bangladesh government’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal migration. She also emphasised Bangladesh’s priority to send skilled and semi-skilled workers abroad so that they can contribute effectively to the economies of both the host country and Bangladesh. The State Minister also expressed appreciation for Oman’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy in the election for the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA81). During the meeting, the State Minister lauded the constructive role of the Omani leadership in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East region, said the Ministry. The Omani Ambassador conveyed his Government’s felicitations to the BNP-led Government of Bangladesh on its victory in the 13th Parliamentary Election. The two sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, investment, culture, and sports.      

Speakers at a discussion here on Sunday suggested effective reform of the tobacco tax structure in the upcoming national budget for the sake of improve public health and thus increasing government revenue. They said the government could generate nearly BDT 44,000 crore in additional revenue from the cigarette sector alone in a fiscal year and reduce the number of premature deaths as the use of tobacco caused some 400,000 premature deaths every year in the country. PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) jointly arranged the discussion titled “Budget 2026–27: Advancing Public Health and Increasing Tobacco Revenue,” at the National Press Club in the city. Economists, physicians, and other experts proposed reducing the number of cigarette price tiers, introducing a specific tax system, and increasing the prices of all tobacco products. The speakers recommended that the government introduce uniform price and taxes for both filtered and non-filtered bidi and the retail price for 20 sticks of bidi should be BDT 30, followed by a 50 percent SD. For smokeless tobacco, the retail price for 10 grams of jarda and gul should be BDT 60 and BDT 30 respectively, followed by 60 percent SD. They also suggest retaining a15 percent VAT on the retail prices of all tobacco products and continuing the existing 1 percent health development surcharge (HDS). Other recommendations placed by them are; merging the low and medium cigarette tiers and setting the retail price at BDT 100 per pack of 10 sticks; setting the high-tier price at BDT 150 and the premium-tier price at BDT 200 or above; retaining the existing 67 percent supplementary duty (SD) on all cigarette tiers; and introducing a specific tax of BDT 4 per 10 sticks. “The price difference between the low and medium tiers is very small. Currently, consumers of the low and medium tiers constitute 90 percent of all cigarette users. Merging these two tiers into one and setting the price of the merged tier at BDT 100 for 10 sticks can increase government revenue and particularly discourage cigarette use among the poor and the youth,” said Dr Mahfuz Kabir, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS). Dr. Rumana Huque, Professor of the Department of Economics at University of Dhaka, said tobacco products are cheaper than essential commodities in Bangladesh, which poses a major threat to public health. “Effective measures must be taken to make tobacco products unaffordable to the people,” she said. Dr. Syed Abdul Hamid, Professor at the Institute of Health Economics of University of Dhaka, said the introduction of a specific tax system is a highly effective measure for simplifying tax collection. Public health expert Dr. Lenin Choudhury urged the policymakers to implement all the prices and tax related proposals presented in the event so that it can discourage tobacco use. Besides, Zahirul Alam, Executive Director of Channel24, Dr Abu Jamil Faisel, President, Public Health Association of Bangladesh, Mortuza Haider Liton, Convener, ATMA, and ABM Zubair, Executive Director, PROGGA, among others, also spoke on the occasion.  

Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee on Sunday said erosion-resistant coastal infrastructure is critical to Bangladesh's long-term security and economic development. "Building sustainable and safe coastal infrastructure is a demand of the time. It is imperative to protect coastal areas from climate-induced risks by using advanced construction materials, eco-friendly engineering, and climate-resilient design," the minister said. He was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'Corrosion-Resistant Coastal Infrastructure in Bangladesh' and the 'Unveiling of Project Management Training Manual (2nd Edition) and Certificate Awarding' ceremony, at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in the capital. The minister said high population density in coastal regions is giving rise to a host of environmental challenges. Agricultural land is shrinking, the number of fishermen is growing, and problems such as overexploitation of coastal resources, water pollution, and destruction of mangrove forests persist unabated, he said. He warned that rising sea levels are accelerating coastal erosion and allowing saline water intrusion into farmland, causing widespread crop damage while also polluting marine ecosystems and disrupting the sea's ecological balance. Calling for maximum use of technology to counter coastal erosion, the minister announced that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is reviving its canal excavation programme. "Over the next five years, 20,000 kilometres of rivers, canals, ponds and reservoirs will be dug or re-excavated. In addition, 250 million trees will be planted, creating a green buffer zone across coastal areas." The minister also underscored the urgent need for a Coastal Zone Management Rules framework and a Special Management Plan to safeguard the environment of coastal regions. He called for laws to protect agricultural land in these areas, modernisation of waste management system and proper regulation of groundwater use. "At the very least, a coordinated integrated plan must be implemented for coastal areas, one that ensures the development of both the people living there and the natural environment." The seminar was organised on the occasion of IEB's 78th founding anniversary and was chaired by Engineer Muhammad Shafiqul Islam Khokon, Chairman of IEB's Civil Engineering Division.    

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and  German development agency GIZ have signed an agreement to accelerate sustainability, green industrialisation, and digital transparency within the country’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. A partnership agreement was signed with an 11-point charter of demands and a strategic cooperation framework at a ceremony held today (Sunday) at the BGMEA Complex in the capital. The initiative aims to help the sector navigate mounting global economic pressures and comply with evolving international trade regulations. Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate on enhancing the environmental standards of Bangladeshi factories. Key focus areas include promoting LEED-certified production and reducing the carbon footprint of the apparel industry, addressing the ongoing energy crisis by promoting renewable energy adoption and improving resource management within factories, implementing better waste management and recycling practices to align with global circular fashion trends. A significant portion of the partnership involves the digitalisation of sector monitoring. This includes the implementation of digital audits for national tax returns and the selection of over 87,000 taxpayers for tech-based transparency checks. The project will also focus on a "one-stop service" model for licenses and permits to reduce the time and complexity currently faced by factory owners.

A two-day programme marking Mother’s Day, organised by Bangladesh’s first parenting app ToguMogu, concluded on Saturday. The event was held on May 8 and 9 at the ToguMogu Parenting Hub in Uttara, Dhaka, bringing together parents and children in a festive and engaging atmosphere. The programme featured puppet shows, magic shows, interactive games, craft sessions and cultural performances. Experts also conducted sessions on child development and positive parenting.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury  said that Bangladesh is proud to reaffirm its commitment to multilateral cooperation and to supporting the global development architecture, including through UNDP, Bangladesh’s longstanding development partner since independence in 1971. “Our contribution to UNDP’s core resources reflects the newly elected Government’s commitment to advancing sustainable development, both at home and globally,” he said. “We are also proud to share Bangladesh’s development experience with countries across the Global South.
